"Other Bookmarks" folder is the final straw

Post by DavidGothenburg »

Here[1] is a thread on request to remove the annoying "Other Bookmarks" folder which has been ignored, and I even can't add comments. It just got worse: Whenever I save a bookmark now, it ends up in this folder. Which is complained about here[2] but ignored so far. This thread[3] is about the same annoyances and suggests "Classic Theme Restorer" to fix it. Classic Theme Restorer is one of all those addons that don't work with Firefox anymore..

And a related annoyance[4], which I am one of the persons complaining about, is how it saves a bookmark after 5 secs automatically if I am not fast enough selecting where to save it. An unrelated annoyance is the grey folders[5] which I found a fix for here, a welcome fx but very manual and the folders become transparent.. A very much related annoyance is how most addons dont work anymore, like the invaluable DownThemAll, IEtab1, IEtab2, Distill Web Monitor, FireFTP and several YouTube downloaders. In fact I right now have the latest FF as 64bit AND and old FF as 32bit to be able to run some old addons. Which is not safe but Mozilla force me to it. (This works fine except I have to copy prefs.js and restore it before opening the 64 bit FF or else my preferences are messed up.) I also made a donation to DTA where i wrote I hope it encourages them to make it work again. But they wrote on their site that they would have to rewrite the whole code and that the new FF platform (WebExtensions API) is not very powerful.

WebExtensions API is the same as Chrome uses. When I chose Firefox many years ago I liked the addons (which mainly made me choose between Firefox and Chrome) and disliked the number of processes and autostart items Chome had and no search bar. But Firefox right now has 7 processes going on my PC (8 with plugin container), and there are addons for Chrome to get a searchbar (Fauxbar and SearchBar). I also liked avoiding using Google for everything and how Mozilla was non-profit, which they like pointing out ever so often, but which is not 100% true: They have divided the company into a non-profit part (Mozilla Foundation) and a company with over 1000 employees, Mozilla Corporation, owned by Mozilla Foundation, which reinvests all profits, but still, providing salaries to over 1000 persons.

The ignorant persons at Mozilla seem to think the mentioned annoyances don't matter. They do. It just pushed me over the edge and I will now go for Chrome. Why wouldn't I? Firefox used to be different and have advantages. I can't see any of that anymore.

I add link list here since I can't write proper html links in the text in this forum.

So how are you adding the bookmarks? When I click on the Star in the location bar I'm offered a drop down list of folders to which the new bookmark can be saved? Do you not see that?

Oh, and are you clear that we are not Mozilla? This forum is not run by or formally associated with Mozilla. We're an independent user-helping-user community.

Moving to Firefox Support.

Default Bookmark Folder lets you pick where bookmarks end up by default.

youtube-dl is better than any add-on. It can be launched via userChrome.js script or External Application Button.
As far as add-ons go, YouTube Video and Audio Downloader is the best. Though it can't mux certain 1080p+ streams (same as all add-ons), most people might only come across such videos rarely.

because you use buggy code of unexperienced users here.

this is known to run perfect:
https://github.com/aris-t2/customcssforfx
most addons dont work anymore
and mozilla wont change it back solely for you. get along with it or go back ESR
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

or use search here to find replacements.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/

the rest of your rant is tl;dr - we dont take complaints. if you want to rant please go here
http://support.mozilla.com/
this is were mozilla devs would probably read it, but not in this place.

otherwise please rephrase your problem in a regular way we can seriously work on ^^

My favourite way of adding bookmarks is to press Ctl-B to see the Bookmarks sidebar. I then click on the icon on the location bar and drag it to the appropriate location on the bookmarks sidebar. As for the "Other bookmarks folder", I have placed it at the very bottom of my bookmarks, so essentially I don't really see it.

Editing css files and adding an addon to fix a simple setting. I was glad to even find a fix for the grey folders and it is good that solutions exist but I'm beginning to feel like too much of a hacker.

@DanRaisch, I liked it best the way it was: Usually I let it be saved in the "root" because then I see it frequently and will handle it soon enough, I seldom chose a different folder at time of bookmark saving - it is easer to save it in the root and drag it than to browse through the folder i/f. Chrome is slightly annoying in that it saves in the latest folder I chose with no setting to change it, but that is acceptable since I can choose to always use the root.

I know as much as fits into my head regarding Mozilla Corporation owning by Mozilla Foundation which according to Wikipedia both support the "non-for-profit" organization/community "Mozilla". Historically I tried posting in this forum as well as mozilla.org, so I had accounts at both and that's why I put my post at both these places.

@Gingerbread Man thanks for tip about YT downloader. Was convenient to have in FF and it has worked excellent for years. This is a weakness of Chrome since Google won't allow addons that download from YT so I need a separate solution anyway. The present FF addons don't work for me all the time. I checked out "youtube-dl" and I really don't want a DOS prompt like program where I enter texts, it says there is a Windows exe but it doesn't seem to do what I want. I'm getting a headache from trying to understand this but seems I have to install an addon to start it? "YouTube Video and Audio Downloader" is reported broken since 4 days back.

I also have issues with videos since they switched to html5, like in full screen mode a yellow square with the url appearing which can't be removed.

I'm trying out Chrome now. But also got tips about 2 Firefox clones which work with the old addons: Pale Moon and Basilisk. Haven't tried them yet though.

Hi,
re; Your YT D/Loader etc.,
This may come in handy...

& for D/Ling them...
> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ownloader/
Both work well.

thats a matter of your profile - eg extension, not youtube or html5. i dont had that, never.
I'm trying out Chrome now
always funny when people go chrome to find features chrome never would offer nor would they find an extension for chrome which is only available for firefox :D

anybody is free you any browser they want to. but its not clever to announce a browser change we dont take care of :D
changing browser wont solve your firefox issues in no way - they will return anytime you will use firefox unless you start using our given ways to a solution
