1- Backup profile to different folder outside of Application Support
2- Uninstall Firefox
3- Reboot (just to be safe)
4- Install ESR
5- Drag backup copy of old profile to Profiles folder while Firefox is closed
6- Open Firefox
7- Open about:profiles
8- Old profile (backup) should show there now
9- Set old profile as default profile
Is that right?

I am not familiar with mac, and making backups is always good, but since you are going from 54 (not 55 and up) to 52 ESR, I believe all you have to do is:
1. Install Firefox ESR.
Firefox ESR will eventually offer to upgrade to versions 60ESR - so check your update settings, you may prefer to disable updates and do some of them manually if you are wanting to avoid 60ESR.

Thanks. You might be right, but I have ended up with duplicate apps in the past, so I followed my instructions above up to step 4, and when Firefox opened, it was already using my old profile.
And yeah, auto updates are already turned off.
