Newbie To Seamonkey (Linux)

Post by caltrop_3 »

First off - this can not be found in repositories...
Is there a URL or PPA that can be used... I suppose not.
Looks like more & more are leaving the repositories & you have to download & manual install or run an installer. :-k

I've read that SeaMonkey can HTML edit.
I had an old WinXP WYSIWYG HTML Editor that was great for my simple local pages and some Java Script too. :)
But since moving to Linux I find little in the way of WYSIWYG.

And don't get me started on the convoluted CSS/HTM editing that has to be done to configure the X/GTK+ Desktop Environment... :x

I have been looking for alternatives to the MESSED-UP FireFox Quantum update & Chromium Chrome Clone. :?

Here's hoping that SeaMonkey works... well, until THEY decide to change HTML again... :?:

Actually, Pale Moon is pretty good too, if you need only a browser.

SeaMonkey can be found in the Ubuntuzilla repository.

I just download the contributed build from https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/#2.49.2 and extract it into a folder.

  • If you want to install SeaMonkey manually, follow these steps:

    Code: Select all

    $ wget https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/seamonkey/releases/2.49.2/linux-x86_64/en-US/seamonkey-2.49.2.tar.bz2

    $ tar -xjvf seamonkey-2.49.2.tar.bz2

    $ sudo rm -rf /opt/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey ( ==> Only if you have a previous version of SeaMonkey installed)

    $ sudo cp -r seamonkey /opt/seamonkey

    $ sudo ln -sf /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

I just cut and paste the tarball from Downloads to my ~/Apps folder, then right click on the file and use Extract Here.

This wiki explains how to place the Sourceforge - Ubuntuzilla repository in your /etc/apt/sources.list.
You can then update through apt or synaptic . Sea Monkey Wiki
