Images in message list

Post by bmaring »

I am starting to get more and more email messages with oversized images embedded in the 'subject' field or 'from' field. Very annoying. Recently got some from Microsoft and Siriusxm. These images obscure other message's 'subject' and 'from' above and below. How can I disable these without screwing up image rendering within the message body?

Didn't even know this was possible. Could you show us a screenshot, maybe?

Never heard of that before. Headers are supposed to be limited to text (though that can include glyphs), but I'm not certain what is supposed to happen if that is ignored.

Please look at the raw message source using view -> message source or Control->U and copy & paste an excerpt starting with the To: header through the first dozen lines of the actual message body. I suggest you replace the actual username in any email address with user_name when you do that to avoid spiders collecting the email addresses.

The Subject header looks like its character encoded using Unicode (UTF-8). That is pretty standard and wouldn't display a image.

I suspect there is an error in the body of the HTML message that causes it to display a remote image at the wrong location. Frequently Thunderbird software make assumptions that it shouldn't, causing problems that don't occur with other email clients.

What happens if you click on "if you having trouble viewing the images click here" in the consumer reports message? Please post that URL. Same for the Sirius message please.

Is there some way I can forward the email messages to you so that you can examine them?

By the way, I don't think it's caused be a body coding error. Just too many like from several senders. I believe that I saw a site recently that was couching others on how to do this.

I will send you a private message with my email address. You can forward those two messages to it.

If you can remember or easily find the web site that was couching others on how to do this I'd appreciate the link.

I used the HeaderToolsLite add-on to edit a copy of the forwarded messages, replacing the Subject with the original messages Subject. That displays the gylphs in the folder listing, which looks identical to whats in the message body. However, I still don't see any artifacts where something is displayed in a location that it is not supposed to be. I'll investigate some more tomorrow, and also try to duplicate the problem using messages that I create using the gmail lab that you pointed me to.

Does the problem disappear if you run Thunderbird in safe mode (help -> troubleshooting -> restart with add-ons disabled)? I'm wondering if the theme (or some other add-on) you are using might have some effect.
