What you are saying is correct:

1. If you allow Firefox to create profiles in default locations, this issue cannot be replicated.
2. Only if custom locations of profiles are used, then profile folders are filled with numerous empty cache2.Trash folders.
3. If about:config > browser.cache.auto_delete_cache_version is set to -1 then instead of numerous empty cache2.Trash folders, a single cache2 folder is created.

Now that we know that - is all this by design of a new feature or is it a bug?
What is the difference between setting browser.cache.auto_delete_cache_version
to -1 vs. 1
The created cache2.Trash folders appear to be empty...

Ha!

If you open FF, them "immediately" close it, you will be left with an empty cache2.Trash#####.
Do a number of open/close cycles & watch the number of cache2.Trash* increment each time.

(And again, I use non-standard Profile locations in case that matters.)

Edit:

And this is with browser.cache.use_new_backend;0 (didn't test with it set to 1).

From that bug, "(we start removing old trash directories after 60 seconds)".

no less secure than the rest of the browsers... Isn't that the reason we still have to use Anti Viruses?
