Thunderbird won't send messages through gmail

Thunderbird won't send messages through gmail, or they send extremely slowly. I'm on Ubuntu 16.04, and thunderbird 52.7.0 (64-bit).

How is that account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP?
Do you have any other accounts set up in Thundrbird that are not having problems sending?

It's IMAP. I have another account that is sending fine.

I've also had issues with rspec not working, which might be related

Do you access Sent messages from more than one machine?
Are you directing Thunderbird to store Sent messages on the server? Check under menu path Edit → Account Settings->Copies & Folders.

I access my mail, including Sent messages from my laptop and my phone using the gmail app.

"Place a copy in" is checked and "other" is selected with "Sent mail on" <my email address>

Just as an experiment, change that "Place a copy in" to Sent under Local Folders. See if you have the same problem sending with that set up.
