Firefox ESR 60.0?

Post by kltpzyxmrm »

I'm using Firefox ESR 52.8.0, but I'm curious about what Firefox ESR 60.0 is about.

Why make an ESR for the Current Firefox version (I'm assuming that's what it is)? How do they differ?

The current ESR will be based on the Firefox 60.0 Release just as the Firefox 52 ESR was based on the Firefox 52.0 Release. Firefox 52.8.0esr is current for 52 ESR and 52.9.0esr out on June 26 (along with 60.1.0esr) will be the last major update apart from any minor updates for security and allowed stability fixes for the old 52 ESR.

Firefox 52 ESR was useful for Enterprise users, for those who needed to use some other NPAPI Plugins besides Flash Player and for those who had say Windows XP or Vista as 53.0 and later does not support XP/Vista. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/en ... -and-vista

Firefox 60 ESR will probably be more focused on Enterprise users now as Mozilla even started a new Enterprise section at SUMO for Enterprise users using 60.0 ESR. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions

ESR 60 is "Quantum", which means that XUL ("legacy") extensions will no longer work.

(For many, outside of the "enterprise" realm, the reason they use 52 ESR is so that their "legacy" extensions work.)

Am I mistaken in thinking that, for security concerns, the effective EOL of the 52esr will be 9/05, when the merge (overlap) between the 52.9/60.1esr ends and the 62/60.2esr are released?

Sort of mistaken.
Releases will be maintained for more than a year, with point releases containing security updates coinciding with regular Firefox releases. The ESR will also have a two cycles (12 week) overlap between the time of a new release and the end-of-life of the previous release to permit testing and certification prior to deploying a new version.

I :-k an individual user could use ESR 60 right now.

Firefox 60.0.2 is the current for both Release and ESR.

That's odd.
The security fixes are not mentioned in the releasenotes.
