I need to get a password and user name that is (probably) contained in one of two profile backups. I know the password vault password for both profiles. One of the backup profiles was made on 3-17-2017 and one on 3-11-2016. Both profile backups (i.e., file copies of the entire profile) would have been made when I was using the then current ESR.
One of the backup profiles was made on 3-17-2017 and one on 3-11-2016. I tried creating a new profile in my current install and then over-copying those files with the backups, but the password vault was empty. How can I recover the information in the password vaults from those two profile backups?

(I'd make backups of you Profiles as a matter of course.)
I might just give this a shot:
Nirsoft's PasswordFox - Extract the user names/passwords stored in Firefox.
It might default to your current FF, but you can tell it to look in a specific directory (Profile location), File | Select Folders.

Fire 750, bring back 250.

PasswordFox worked well for me; thanks for the suggestion.
