Seamonkey full h264 / mp4 / aac support / XP SP3

Post by rereser »

seamonkey 2.49.3 / xp sp3

download the top file from here.
https://o.rthost.cf/palemoon/?sort=date&order=desc
palemoon-28.0.0a4.win32-git-20180616-ec2e3bc02-xpmod.7z

extract file , do not run palemoon. (no need)
copy these 3 files from the folder :

mozavcodec.dll
mozavutil.dll
vcomp140.dll

copy them to the seamonkey program files folder and overwrite.
now seamonkey has full h264 / mp4 / aac support.
no about:config tweaks needed.

test here.
https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html
and here.

I'll note that "vcomp140.dll" does not exist in a SeaMonkey install.

RicGates mentioned a different method that works for him - with SeaMonkey 2.48, https://mozilla.logbot.info/seamonkey/2 ... #c14880530.

I'll take it that related discussion is here (New Moon) Building a Pale Moon fork for Windows XP?

You're suggesting to use the PM 28 builds.
Would PM 27 builds work just as well?

Confirmed, works, H.264/MP4 here, https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html.
(I ran this sandboxed, Sandboxie, using the dll's from PM 28 builds.)

thanks for testing and confirming.

no need to run in a sandbox , files are clean.
credit to Roy Tam for making this work in the palemoon fork.

here is where i got the idea to replace files.
https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my- ... on-for-xp/
tested version 28.
no cisco or primetime plugin but mp4 worked.
the extra lav dll files are not required if a codec pack is already installed.
started comparing new-moon and seamonkey program files and at the end of testing only these 3 files were needed.
only the extracted folder is needed , the folder holds the program files.
no need to run new moon , it will create the appdata profile folder when you do.

vcomp140.dll is Microsoft® C/C++ OpenMP Runtime 14.13.26020.0 and is not part of a seamonkey install. (should be)
without this dll however it will not work.
pm build 28 has the 3 files needed. (overwrite 2 and add the microsoft dll)
a few older builds have the same files but file-sizes were the same so i used the latest build.
hope this post gets enough attention so that the next seamonkey xp release will have these files in the installer.
maybe with a dll version rename. (properties / version)

with this you can disable the flash plugin.

the hack for firefox esr 52.8 with the cisco and primetime plugins still works.
seamonkey is missing the plugins for getting that to work. (whatever version)

however , i don't want to use firefox if i can help it. (or chrome for that matter.)
maybe someone can post the 3 files here as an attachment.
would save people some time.

regards.

remark : the user agent displayed in my posts is a modified general.useragent.override setting.
still running windows xp sp3 with seamonkey 2.49.3 here.

FWIW.

Code: Select all

<ntb>	dude you can't just share platform generated dlls like that
	<ntb>	it could be disasterous
<ntb>	mozavcodec ties into libxul for instance
<ntb>	if they don't match up.. it will crash
<ntb>	it's only a happen stance that this person got it to work
	<ntb>	it's obvious

make that "old dude" please.
i know it's just my first post at this board so it doesn't carry much weight.
also know this is not the correct way of doing things.
only wanted to show that in newmoon it works and that it can and does work in seamonkey.
tested this for several days very extensive , not crashed yet and don't believe it will.
if you try this and want your old files back just install again , or rename the 2 files to dll.old before using the other ones.

Oh, I'm not complaining, only mentioning what was told to me, & not that I know if it is right or wrong.
(I was the "dude" the person was speaking to, BTW.)

(Since we're here, just to note, this same method does not work in FF 38. Didn't really expect it to, but since I was checking something else, figured I'd give it a whirl.)

that gave me an idea ...
tested this on firefox esr 52.8.1 on xp. (clean install)
guess what , it works also.
no need for cisco or primetime plugin with all the tweaks in about:config.
flash can be disabled.

if you want to try this and have both plugins , disable them. (also if you only have the cisco plugin)
restart firefox.
in about:config setting media.gmp-provider.enabled to false.
this removes both the cisco and adobe primetime plugin. (the gmp folders are not deleted)
you can do this if you want but you don't need to. (appdata / profile )
then copy the 3 files as described in the first post.

plugincontainer.exe is also not running in task manager anymore when playing mp4.
these are some magic dll files.

for testing on hd video ...
Planet Earth: Amazing nature scenery (1080p HD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v2L2UGZJAM

have fun.

update ...
seamonkey 2.49.4 did not include the palemoon dll files.

palemoon latest version 28 has updated dll files.
http://o.rths.cf/palemoon/?sort=date&order=desc
basilisk now also has these same files included.
http://o.rths.cf/basilisk/?sort=date&order=desc

mozavcodec.dll / version 4.1.4.6803
mozavutil.dll / version 4.1.4.6803
vcomp140.dll / version 14.15.26608.1
vcruntime140.dll / version 14.15.26608.1

seamonkey has not crashed once since replacing / adding these in the program files folder.
hit a small snag yesterday at https://www.deezer.com/us/ (free account)
no streaming html5 audio was playing.
only had sound with adobe flash installed.

a change in the general.useragent.override setting fixed that.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.115 Safari/537.36
now deezer plays html5 audio without flash.

regards.
