Firefox CPU use keeps building up

Post by zorro6204 »

When I start Firefox it uses 200-400K CPU memory, but regardless of the web page open, the memory use keeps climbing. For example, I've had it up for about fifteen minutes and it's already up to 824K and climbing. Anyone have that problem? Is there a fix?

You could try updating to the current release version, 61.0.1.
Alternatively ---
Have you tried starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

I'm up to date, but only as much as Firefox allows because (yes I know), I'm still using XP until I switch over next month. Still, it would be nice for Firefox to work in the meantime. I'll try your suggestions.

(That's "RAM memory". And while we're at it, how is [FF] CPU usage hanging?)

I'm not sure what you mean, I'm talking CPU resource use, that Task Manager reports. For example, I've been online for about twenty minutes and the CPU use has crept up to 767K and is climbing about 1K per ten seconds. It just doesn't stop. Just a couple of weeks ago, with the same setup, I was leaving my brokerage website open for six-seven hours a morning, and a couple of other financial websites besides, with no problems. Now it would freeze up before a half hour passed. So what changed?

Maybe firefox update, maybe extension update, maybe adware. Could be anything because of xp.

Get adwcleaner from bleeping site and run it, post logfile here.

The only add-on I have enabled is Hide Tab Bar, last updated in 2016. Adwarecleaner wouldn't load, got an error message, but I have an anti-virus package, scan regularly, I run a key logging blocker, Cyber Scrub every few days, and I have both Microsoft security updates (after they quit supporting XP). Firefox history is set to "never", no cache. I also use a host file, and I clear cookies every time I sneeze. I don't see anything new that shows up on HiJackthis:

Ah well, I'm getting by just shutting Firefox down rather than leaving web pages open for an extended period. Soon I'll be entering the Windows 10 world, and will get to experience a whole new level of f/ups as I try to copy the functions of ten years worth of XP video processing software.

Dont waste time with outdated hjt. But avg and zemana... Dont you know NOT to run more than one av?

Apologized for adwcleaner, no longer designed to run on xp

I have no other clue except you to upgrade asap to a supported windows!

I'm not using two antii-virus programs, do you NOT know how to read a logfile? I'm only using their key logger protection.

Antilogger is a half baked antivirus. It need definitions to work. And afair antilogger that build is out of support. Its an active program beside avg, weather you like it or not, it could cause mismatch. Anyhow im out, i dont need such behavior and know-it-all. But i oversaw a third program:
CYBERSCRUB PRIVACY SUITE SCHEDULER AGENT
Its not possible to cure firefox with such armada of software on a high vulnerable system.
As recommended start over with another windows, good luck.

I've had the key logger program and Cyberscrub installed ever since Microsoft quit supporting XP, with zero problems. Where did I ever claim to be a know it all? Heck, I just bought my first Windows 10 machine to learn how to use the darn thing. I came here asking for advice, not to be talked down to. It's not helpful.

In any case, get this, the problem stopped. I swear on my beloved Omnikey keyboard I made absolutely no changes. Right now Firefox is cruising along at 365K with three windows open. I don't know, but I'll take it.

Likely drunk on too much Moz-Aid again, its daily abuse usually starts around this hour.

On my end, XP, in a new Profile, on startup, FF is eating
~210 MB of RAM
(& that's MB & "RAM memory", not CPU, just to be clear)

> & default Home Page are open

Adding

to the mix, & scrolling down to the bottom of the page (as it loads more content as you go), & FF is using

~500 MB of RAM.

That is with (those) 3 tabs open.
No extensions.

IOW, everything affects what you may or may not see; sites, extensions, plugins...
That you are seeing 200-400 or 800 may not be atypical.

Closing the Yahoo tab, & memory dropped to
~350 MB.
Not as low as having only the first two tabs open on start, but lower.
And very possible that during this session, I'll never drop below that ~350 number.
Fire 750, bring back 250.

It wasn't just the amount of memory being used, although it was high. It was that the memory use just kept going up, regardless of what webpage was loaded. Eventually it got so high that Firefox slowed to a crawl and basically froze. Anyway, it just stopped happening. I have no idea why.

My setup has been rock solid for years, I hate to see XP go. It did everything I wanted, and very little I didn't want (aside from trying to shove Internet Explorer in my face of course).
