Broken Updated Google Calendar Provider

Post by DN123ABC »

Anybody having trouble with this Thunderbird extension? It seems to have updated recently, and now everybody's calendars are broken.

As a side thing, it seems that McAfee antivirus is catching the calendar.js (or something like that) script, and quarantining it. Not sure whether or not that is related.

Any ideas?

This is still horribly broken. People cannot view gmail calendars with Thunderbird/Lightning.

Does anybody here have this working? If so, can you provide a DETAILED method for making it work?

The calendars work fine in Chrome or Firefox.

Thank you.

There is a problem with reminders (and only reminders) with Thunderbird and Provider for Google Calendar v. 4.4.x. If you use Thunderbird 60, you must use the latest Provider (v.4.4.x) which has this issue, but if you use Thunderbird 52.x, you can use either version 4.4.x or version 3.3 which works perfectly fine.

Suggestion: use Thunderbird 52.9 with the current embedded Lightning (5.4.9.1) and Provider v. 3.3.

Preliminary question

First of all, if you have already connected to Google calendars and they don't work, you might either want to remove all Google calendars or simply remove the passwords so the provider asks you for a new password.

How to remove calendars

– Go to the Calendar tab

– Right-click on any of the calendars and select "Unsubscribe from this calendar".
Do that for all your Google calendars.

How to erase the password for all google calendars

– Press on ALT to show full menus, then select Tools –> Options.

– Go to "Security" tab (the padlock icon) and click on "Registered passwords"

– In the search string, insert "your_account_name@gmail.com.

– Delete the line(s) identified as "Google Calendar OAuth Token")

– Close, then quit Thunderbird. Wait a few seconds

– Restart Thunderbird. Your password will be asked once or twice as the Provider will try to reconnect to your calendar(s)

How to connect to new Google Calendars

– In the Calendar window, click in the lower part of the left panel (under all your current calendars).
Click "New Calendar". A new window will appear at the top left of your screen (it's easy to miss if you have a large screen).

– Select "On the network". Then Next

– Select "Google Calendar". Then Next

– Either select an existing account (ex.: "your_account@gmail.com").
If your account isn't already listed, enter its address.

– If you have selected an existing address, this step is skipped.
If you have entered a new address, a new window will appear (it's sometimes hidden, so double-check) asking you for your account name and password. Follow the directions.

– Another window will appear with a list of available calendars and task lists. Subscribe to all those you want to use.

– Click "Next" then "OK" to end the process.

As they say, it has worked for me for quite some time.

Not really true. We had several version 52.x (whatever is the otherwise most recent) running, with Lightning and Google calendar provider running. The Google stuff had already stopped working, but the local calendar was working fine. Thunderbird would start up normally every time, but the Google calendars were broken. We already gave up on that, by using a browser to access the calendars.

HOWEVER, after installing the new version 60, I thought we might try to see if it would fix the Google calendar issue. Not only did it NOT FIX THE ISSUE, it also throws up an error message for every calendar when you start Thunderbird. This was very confusing and disrupting to people, so I had to just unsubscribe those calendars to make the message stop. Not a huge deal, since they were not displaying anyhow, but we were not expecting that.

Your instructions are not 100% correct. The "Next" is not clickable until after putting something in the box.

After doing that, then hitting next, I get this error:

"An error was encountered preparing the calendar located at https://calendar.google.com/calendar?ci ... YWlsLmNvvW for use. It will not be available."

This address comes from the calendar in browser, by clicking "get shareable link".
