Tabs

Post by KlondikeGeoff »

I have version 52.9.0 (32-bit). and can't update as use Win XP.

I hate tabs. Is there any way to turn them off altogether?

Searching the Knowledge Base found I could turn off the current tab by hitting CTRL+w, but that just close down FF.

Any suggestions?

What would you be using if you don't have any tabs? :-k

Bookmarks.

I have every site I want to visit there, I have no use for tabs, and what bugs me is that, after visiting several sites, I shut down FF, and when I reopen it I get one of those annoying messages "This is embarrassing, but FF can't close down tabs" or something to that effect. I then have to uncheck the list of tabs evidently there before can use FF.

I have used computers since 1981, even before Windows started, used every version from 1.0 to the present. I got FF when it first started, before tabs were invented as i recall. So, at age 91 I get PO'd easily, if that explains anything :D .

Found this code via Google, it works for me on Mac.
Add it to your userChrome file.

Code: Select all

/* hides the native tabs */
#TabsToolbar {
  visibility: collapse;}
Edit: Since posting I played with this a little. While you
don't see the tabs they are still there, just hard to use.

There may be config options which will force all new tabs
to open in a new window instead; I didn't see any that would
do that completely. I'm guessing, but it looks like tabs are so
much a part of Firefox (and other browsers) that you might
not be able to use it without them.

Good luck anyway. Being 91 probably explains everything.
I'm not there yet but my older sister is, and her solution
to computers is not to allow one in her house. Maybe that's
the way to go.

Before tabs, I opened links in a new window, either closed the old one or left it.

Thanks for the info. My memory being as bad as it is, now and then I have a flash. I remember now many versions back, FF did let you remove the tab bar. Then came an "improved version" that no longer let us do that, and so it goes.

Your sister may be right, but not for me. My first computer was a Commodore VIC-20 and I love dd the thing. It had an astonishing memory of 5K. I programmed in DOS before Windows came out. It was supposed to make thing simpler, but...

I don't want to be around if I can get to my computer!
