Checked to immediately mark messages as read but function stopped.
Was always working previously.

See if the problem occurs in safe mode (help -> restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled). I'd assume its a problem with one of your add-ons or profile since I haven't noticed anybody else reporting this problem recently.
When I change it to mark it read after 1 second that set mailnews.mark_message_read.delay true and mailnews.mark_message_read.delay.interval to 1. mailnews.mark_message_read.auto is still at the default value of true.
Re-checking "immediately mark messages as read on display" changed mailnews.mark_message_read.delay back to false. I suggest you examine those three settings using the config editor. Almost always the user interface accurately reflects the config editor settings, but there have been a very few cases where that wasn't true.
If none of this helps, figure out what changed in your environment. Did Thunderbird auto-update to a new version of an add-on or ....?
