Firefox replaced my prior version without permission!

I launched Firefox this morning, and got a bunch of strange screens, including requiring "Safe Mode". When I finally got on, my older version of Firefox was GONE, replaced by the "latest version". As a system's programmer, I find this behavior reprehensible.

well, you have accepted Mozillas license agreement thus firefox itself updated from vulnerable and not acceptable v56 to current and secure v64. how much this was enforced due your settings or not, i can not speak for OSX. currently i dont see a bug.

What was you older version?

Anyhow, quite feasible that that can happen, in any manner of ways.
To use older FF, you generally need to take precautions.
(Without precautions, unwanted children & all that go along with that .)

Hopefully I've found the post. V65 was horrible for me. Missing the Bookmarks Toolbar was the most visible difference. All my Extensions were gone. ... Anyway, I was able to restore V56 from a backup, including all the settings, which had been moved to a new (different) directory. So, I'm bask to what I know, and feel comfortable using. I've taken protective measures to block replacement of v56. Dick Guertin

Well Fx65 is Beta and does have the waste of space Bookmarks Toolbar, (View/Toolbars or Customize/Toolbars) as does Fx64.

Fine, but no menton of Extensions, like Cookies Manager, which I need. Also, the other major problem I face is the I've gor five (5) Mac-systems, Two are High-Sierra, two are Yosemite, and one is Snow Leopard (for Power PC stuff). Any change in Bookmarks in one system, is copied to the other four systems (places.sqlite is copied).. I can't run v65 on Snow Leopard. So me 'solution' is to stick with a Firefox that works identically across systems. In my case, Mozilla DOESN'T know what's 'best' for me...

Own two Macs and FF does NOT change versions unless I do it manually. Sounds like you have mis-configured FF.

I had this problem on Linux

As all Firefox releases are beta versions, it is a scandal to act like this. Even Skype or Google Earth don't do this.
I am with Firefox 52 which is quite stable, as Firefox 66 crashes in less than 1 hour and doesn't do the job with his missing add-ons.

Seeing as you are posting with XP and the last version of Firefox for XP was 52.9.0esr I doubt you even had 66 installed

Yes I am here on XP but I am also on Linux with Firefox 52.9.0 esr (dual boot with two distinct hard drives) and yesterday I still made a attempt with Firefox 66 using a fresh install of Mint 19.1 and concluded : stay with 52.9.0 blind man !!
