Well 2.57 won't be a clone of Fx. Sticking with 2.49 is not an option. It becomes long in the tooth already. Sticking with either 2.53 or 2.57 might be, depending on the outcome. I can still happily port even some Fx 66 changes to 2.53 now without much fuzz. 56 already had most of the key components more or less in place. 2.57 even more. Just changes in some components give me some grief.

> Yeah, if the Council officially announced

Why should the council announce something? The current path ist 2.49.x as an interim and 2.57 as the next major version. This has not changed and unless 2.57 becomes a hopeless dream this is the party line. No one in the council including me has definite answers beyond 2.57 but it should give us some breathing space.

A council that hasn't officially announced anything at all in the last 5 years at least comes across as spurious as the Wizard of Oz and the little guy hiding behind a curtain, that's why..

You can try the current unofficial 2.57. The browser works. It not ready for action because of many broken parts but they can be fixed either by fixing or taking out bad Mozilla patches. It isn't fixed yet because not enough devs.

What is in the blog is as officially as it gets: https://blog.seamonkey-project.org/
What is in the status meetings is as officially as it gets: https://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey/StatusMeetings
The people still acitively participating are basically the council. See here: https://www.seamonkey-project.org/about
So if you want, join the next meeting, ask about future plans and you will basically get the same answer I gave.

I have my own opinion about some things so I will add a disclaimer whenever I think I shouldn't speak for the council.

My own stance on this matter (and, of course, YMMV) is that as long as there is a usable SeaMonkey supporting classical extensions, I'll use it. If some day there isn't ($DEITY and its angels frg & Ewong preserve us ;-) ), both Linux-only Konqueror and free-as-in-beer closed-source Opera (in that order) are higher on my list than both Firefox and Chromium. For mail I've already gone over to webmail so that won't change much.
Best regards,
Tony

As an aside and, in fairness, a lot of projects use the same method, here's what a Status Meeting looks like when the copy 'n paste is added in and the whole thing tidied up -

Pull back the curtain and here's the reality of the same meeting -

As for the topic in hand - well, we'll see, won't we?

Highly doubt that SeaMonkey will look and act like a Firefox clone. :-k
My alternative to SeaMonkey happens to be Firefox.

Well it is a browser and not a life raft or pace maker. So use what works for you. Personally I am finished with Mozilla.
Anything done with the current devs on hand after 2.57 would currently probably result in a bad stripped down SeaMonkey copy. I wouldn't want to be part of it.

Lets first see if we are able to deliver 2.57 and then judge over it. It will not be an Fx 60 clone or I will walk away from it. My favorite currently is 2.53 and I hope that 2.57 will be at least as good. In some areas I have some doubt if we pull it off but in others it should be better.

Current 2.49.5 is at ESR 60.2 level. I am planning to bring it up further but we need to get it building with the new infra first. 2.53 is a mix and at 52.9 and in some parts even beyond ESR 60 level (e.g. TLS 1.3 and NSS). Only need to do 300 more backports and it will be at 60.5 :) The worst offenders are already in. If you use uBlock and NoScript I consider both 2.49.5 and 2.53 safe.

2.53 would need l10n changes/translations to become an official release and I currently don't see how we can do this or I would suggest dropping 2.49 in a minute.

Don't put much stock into what he said (about Pale Moon in particular).
Fire 750, bring back 250.

 Well said!
Hoping that Mozilla might come to its senses *cough* Who knows? :-k
Am waiting to see what SeaMonkey 2.57 will look like when it finally comes out as a stable release.
Again, I doubt that'll be a Firefox clone. IMHO it can still keep its own unique GUID.
Have seen many, many a browser come and go over the years.
One of my personal favourites was Netscape Navigator.
Also, IMHO SeaMonkey can have a strong future.
Perhaps a stronger marketing campaign.
A lot of us here could contribute some $ and the developers for SeaMonkey are still working to keep SeaMonkey ongoing.
KUDOS to ALL of them! =D>

Interesting information about ideas for the future of the SeaMonkey browser from https://blog.seamonkey-project.org/
ewong wrote: Re: Quantum SeaMonkey is 3.0. Definitely a possibility if we go the Quantum route.

Thanks for the suggestions!

:ewong
Personally, I kinda like the idea of SeaMonkey Quantum 3.0 8-)
And, no it doesn't have to look like a clone of Firefox.
SeaMonkey can still have its own unique GUID and browser features. :D
There are loads of members here who can support the SeaMonkey council.
Heck, if everyone here even contributed just a few $ if would help them a lot.
And we've also got people here who make themes, third party browsers builds, Bill's SeaMonkey builds, etc. than can help out too. :-k
I don't build browsers, but, I am willing to contribute some $ to help keep SeaMonkey up and running. :D
So I say let's get this campaign going! IMHO it's a worthy cause for our beloved SeaMonkey browser.

Thanks very much for posting that information. :)
Read those a lot to check up on the status of the SeaMonkey browser.
Me and the rest of my colleagues in our IT department love it! :D
We all feel its one of the very best browsers out there and all of use it on our home computers and recommend it to clients. :)

Checking out some of the SeaMonkey unofficial builds from here.
http://www.wg9s.com/
Trying to decide about using 2.53 until the next official release of SeaMonkey roles out. :-k
Anyone have any suggestions on one that they particularly like or recommend?
Am also making sure to back up my profile for 2.49.4 and then use another profile setting for 2.53.

Me too I use WG9S's 2.53. The first time I did, I backed out my profile, but I've had no problems with it, it works beautifully AFAICT: I never had to roll back that backup. Before that, I was using the last 2.54a1 nightly before the Toolkit (& Firefox) developers removed classical extensions support (build ID 20170806003001).
