artifacts in email text

A couple of people I exchange email with on a regular basis and emails that end up in 2 or more exchanges thus making a thread, I noticed anything that I send out and is in the thread as a reply has ?? after each period ending a sentence. It's something that just started happening. Another friend gets something like this ;/

I don't know what either uses for their email but it seems to be hit or miss and it's always in my text that I send out and received back in a reply.

Not necessarily looking for a solution but just curious. I'll take a solution if you got one.
