videos won't play

Post by The.Purple.Hippo »

There are some sites where the video won't play. I want to watch the NASA Site: https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/#public but it tells me that my browser isn't supported.

Or on Youtube such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21X5lGlDOfg

Or even this site: https://theproteinparadox.com/181009A.php?n=db which tells me that "this video isn't encode for your device."

How can I use SeaMonkey and watch these videos?

Thanks.

You are using outdated browser on outdated operating system.

First step - updated to latest (official) SeaMonkey 2.49.4:
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releas ... key2.49.4/

Second step - enable HTML5 video for SM on your old OS:

NASA TV works for me only with Safari and Opera, not with SeaMonkey, Pale Moon, or Slimjet.

NASA TV works fine for me with SM 2.53 :D

Edit: you can check here https://www.youtube.com/html5 wich video formats are supported with your SM.
With SM 2.53 all Video formats are supported

I went to the view topic link, and downloaded palemoon. I had to go back a long way, cause the newer versions don't have the 3 files.

Anyways, the NASA site and youtube works fine now =D> , but still nothing for: https://theproteinparadox.com/181009A.php?n=db . I guess I'll have to view it in chrome :( .

Also, SM 2.49.4 is the last official release, not SM 2.53 :D. That must be an experimental build ](*,) .

Since you appear to be using the ol EOL Windows XP you would not be able to use SeaMonkey versions like 2.53 since it is based on Gecko 60.0 esr. 53.0 and later requires Windows 7, 8 (8.1) and 10 to run.

Microsoft does not support WinXP like they do with Vista and later with the Media Feature Packs which install things like codecs that is used for say HTML5 players. You can see what you can only support at the mentioned https://www.youtube.com/html5 page.

Chrome for XP and Vista is old as the last version was from April 2016. It seems to work better for HTML5 players because it cheats by coming with its own codecs.

for xp , if you don't have a codec pack installed you also need this.
http://o.rths.cf/palemoon/lav.7z
unpack and place the files in the seamonkey program folder.
and you need these 4 files , not the 3 as mentioned above.
mozavcodec.dll
mozavutil.dll
vcomp140.dll
vcruntime140.dll
from this release , http://o.rths.cf/palemoon/palemoon-28.5 ... f-xpmod.7z

if you don't want to use the lav codec , do this.
use these 2 files from the mypal release and overwrite the palemoon versions.
mozavcodec.dll
mozavutil.dll
https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal/releases
get the most recent 32 bit version.
unpack with winrar.

not needed but this is a good media player.
it includes the needed codecs for all your offline video files.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/ ... p/download
latest version for xp.

no-script and other java script / adds block addons will prevent some online video to play so check that.

in about:config , create a new string general.useragent.override with the value below this post.

All 6 are checked as being fine for SeaMonkey, but some videos will not play. I can ususlly get them with Safari.
The link at YouTube works fine for me, but not the one for TheProteinParadox. In fact, the latter works only with Safari, not with Opera.

Here is the direct link to the Protein video: https://gh-oo-dd.akamaized.net/N3NXVjaD ... OjAwMTsqts
Does the video play or do you get some error messages?

Edit:
After applying the tweaks from rereser all videos also play on WIN XP with SM 2.49

where did you find that? And it does play just fine.
rereser wrote:for xp , if you don't have a codec pack installed
The only codec pack I have is from here: https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm . I guess its only for offline viewers only.

I'm very upset to learn SM won't be continued for XP users. :(

there's only 3 files, not 4:

avcodec-lav-57.dll
avutil-lav-55.dll
avresample-lav-3.dll

Using these files made all 3 sites play just fine.

Thanks

good to see you got it to work and thanks hardys for testing and confirming.
4 files from the mypal / palemoon release and 3 files from the lav codec.
and the general.useragent.override modification for html5 audio on deezer.com
that is all you need for seamonkey html5 video and audio on win xp.
when you install the coming seamonkey 2.49.5 you will have to repeat the above.
so keep the files.

You can see the origin of the video in the source code of the website.
If it doesn't play within the site, then maybe some bad browser sniffing or poorly written script code on this website.

The video from your link works. I tried the original link with Opera again, and this time it played, although without any sound. There are no play controls with the original link, though they are there with your link.
