Hi guys. I think I found the problem!
It's apparently caused by an addon, but the only way to get things working properly is to *remove* it. Disabling it or running safe mode still causes the anomaly. Really weird. I found the problem when I created yet another profile and started moving older profile files to it, one by one. When I transferred the extensions folder, and allowed the extensions to be installed, bingo ... the problem began again.
It's called image block and was originally written by Hemant Vats, but I think pinchCZN does it now. See https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/se ... N/?src=api
It's real simple and just allows you to turn images on or off with a single click instead of going into preferences. I used it many years with older seamonkey versions. but now I'm out of luck. I wish I could find something similar.
Mozilla has made it very hard to get addons these days, for some reason.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for the help.

You just want to switch preferences? You can use "Custom Buttons" extension:donm4599 wrote:[...]

I was using it for "autoplay" toggle but right now I'm using dedicated extension:

Thanks TPR. I looked through some of the customs buttons links, but I'm not sure I have the expertise to program the code for it.

I am using prefbar to disable images or javascript.
After install you can use F8 to show or hide the toolbar
http://prefbar.tuxfamily.org/archive.html
The version 7.1.1 works with SM 2.49.5 or 2.53

Thanks Hardys; I downloaded it and will probably install later.
It's good to have something onhand that's known to work.

Hey Hardys, where is SM V2.53 ?hardys wrote:I am using prefbar to disable images or javascript.

When I installed my new SM a week or two ago, I thought I was getting the latest version, but it shows as SM 2.49.4.

2.53 is the unofficial version provided by WG9s and maintained by frg
It is only available in en-US or with a german language pack.

Re: Homepage problem at seamonkey startup
Hi, I'm just reporting back what finally seems to have solved the problem, though I still don't know why this worked. I waited a while to be sure it wasn't a flash in the pan.
I have SM version 2.40 on an old Win XP computer which has been using a very, very ancient image block (converted). I've been using it so many years that I can't remember where I got it, but I had to use the converter to make it work with SM.
So, I copied it from my seamonkey profile onto a usb flash drive, then transferred to my newer Win 10 computer running SM 2.49.
IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM! Just as it has for so many years.
So that problem is now solved. But I still can't get any version of quicknote to work with SM2.49, though it appears other folks have been successful.
Just wanted to say thanks and follow up on the final solution in case it helps someone down the road.

More follow up regarding quicknote. (it may help someone in the future)
After months, I installed quicknote once again, though I've done that many, many times with bad results.
IT WORKS NOW!
V 0.7.6, same as I never got to work before. The developers quit updating QN many years ago, so the latest version is old, almost old enough to buy cigarettes.
There are a few hinky things about the settings, but most seem to work fairly well, and a very few have to be set in about:config.

Here's what I believe happened:
Since the problems, when I finally gave up, win 10 has had numerous updates, including a major update to version 1903 (which I dreaded & put off till late june).
I think the updates in these past months must have made the difference. Of course, the other side of this coin is that some future update may well destroy it.
Microsoft whimsically changes things just for the sake of change. Sometimes they even rename old functions, just to create confusion. Anyone notice that windows security "definitions updates" are now security "intelligence" updates? I know I'm sure impressed at the new name for the same old stuff
Anyway, just what I think, and I followed up here for anyone that stumbles upon this.
