emails desktop to laptop

I use a laptop and a desktop. The desktop has been playing up recently so all my emails have been read on the laptop.
I have now got the desktop working again with one small problem.
Before if I deleted an email on my desktop it did not appear on my laptop.
Now, however, if I read and delete an email on the desktop it still appears on the laptop.
How can I correct this please?

If a POP account one solution would be to check "Leave messages on server" in the server settings for both machines, but on just the desktop also check "until I delete them". However, that assumes you are always going to read new mail first on the the desktop.
