Problems on the BBC web site (Mac)

Post by Jonzjob »

I am having a strange problem when I sign on to the BBC news web site. I can access the Home page, but when I try to go to any other page using the Home page links I get the message

'Not found. Please check your DNS. Internal reference TA-1437.'

Most of the time the page will show for a fraction of a second and then revert to a blank white page with the above message in the top left corner. This has only just started today and has been fine for years now. Nothing has been changed that I am aware of and it is not happening on our MacBook Pro 13. Both machines are on Firefox 67.0.2 (64 bit)

This problem does not happen on any other web site I have tried. Any ideas please?

Just to say that I have just updated my Firefox to 67.0.4 and the problem is still the same. I have also tried the same site using Safari on my iMac and it is OK on that application

Have you tried starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

Sorry Dan, I didn't see your very prompt reply.

As you can see from my edit above, we are running Macs on OS X 10.13.6 High Sierra so the windows link won't apply. I didn't realise there was a safe mode and I will look at that.

I am sorry to say that I am a complete numby when it comes to this sort of thing and it seem strange that it happened out of the blue, so to speak, and it is only happening on on site and then only from the sub sites on it. I am and aways have been frightened of doing things in 'Terminal'. Just the name is enough to be terminal for me!

Even so, I have opened Firefox in Safe Mode and it is still the same problem. Is there such a thing as a single syllable type answer to this please?

Please post the URL (web address) of the specific link you're trying to view when that error message is displayed. I've visited the BBC site without seeing any issues but it could be a localization issue or perhaps it's related to the fact I'm in the US rather than Europe.

The site is https://www.bbc.co.uk/news

I have found that I can get on to any of the 'headlines' on the page, but not on to the top links such as 'Sport', 'Business' or any of the ones across the top. As I said, I can get straight to everything using Safari and everything on my MacBook Pro 13 so it is very specific to my iMac and the Firefox on it?

I am sorry for being such a thicky. It's very frustrating because anything that I can hit I can usually fix, but software ?????

I'm not seeing the problem here with Firefox 67.0.4 under Windows 10. Since you are running a Mac we may have to wait for other Mac users to chime in to confirm whether or not they see the problem.

OP, edit your first post to add 'MAC" to the title to attract some MAC users

Using FF68 on Mac OS10.13.6 High Sierra I have no problem with any of those links and neither does my wife on her Mac.

I have had exactly the same problem with exactly the same error message on the same page on Windows10.
It started after a power cut took down my PC and broadband.

The issue was only on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news. It did not affect any of the sub pages e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world, or the parent http://www.bbc.co.uk.

If I was on any of the sub pages and clicked on the top news tab or news home, I got the same error message.

I tried flushing my DNS cache, rebooting the PC and the router, all to no avail.

If I tried on Crome, it worked perfectly, so the issue was obviously with Firefox.

The only think I could think of to try was to clear all the BBC cookies - SUCCESS. :D
Normal service was resumed and I have had no trouble since.

Hope this helps

I've been receiving that error on the BBC website. I'm using Windows 10 (with Google Chrome) and connecting through a VPN. I'd be surprised if the VPN were not a reason. If I reload the page, it works. So anyway, we can know that it's not a Firefox-specific problem.
