Thunderbird 60.7.2 locks up (Linux)

Post by aik_au »

TB locks up and "kill/wait" window appears. TB does not report doing anything in the status line, it is happening last month and I am not sure why. Reading mail, scrolling down - locked up. Typing an email, suddenly - locked up. And so on. Disabled all addons. When it is syncing a folder - it becomes utterly slow but still does not lock up. What else to try? Thanks.

Fedora 29, x86-64.

Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

After few days of trying --safe-mode - lockups happen less often but still happen several times a day.

And does the lock up occur regardless of which folder you are working in or is it principally in one or more specific folders?
If the latter case, you might try right clicking on the folder name in the left hand pane and selecting "Properties" from the context menu displayed, then on the "Repair Folder" button.

lockups happen when reading a random folder. the "browser console" has this:
===
uncaught exception: 2147746065 autosync.js:206:13
1563154362095 addons.update-checker WARN Update manifest for {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd} did not contain an updates property
1563154362254 addons.update-checker WARN Update manifest for wetransfer@extensions.thunderbird.net did not contain an updates property
TypeError: this.chromeUtilsWindow.openUILinkIn is not a function[Learn More] hudservice.js:387:7
===

few of these actually. There are no dates, no "clear all" so I do not know if these are relevant. And there is no addon with this uuid or "westransfer" in the name. I disabled addons autoupdate, let's see if this helps...

feels like it is logging onto imap4 is what is causing the problem but cannot confirm as it is imap4+ssl port 993 so tcpdump cannot distinguish login attempts from other trafic.
Is there a tool in TB to debug this?

I am running TB now with:
MOZ_LOG=MsgPurge:5,MsgDB:5,MsgCopyService:5,msgcompose:5,MailDirStore:5,Mailbox:5,timestamp thunderbird/thunderbird

I can see a bunch of messages like:
2019-09-05 00:35:08.342987 UTC - [7602:Main Thread]: I/MsgDB /home/aik/.thunderbird/1uyb844t.aik/ImapMail/imap.gmail.com/_arch_.sbd/2017.msf - 315 hdrs in use

In these messages I can see subscribed folders and folders with a "download" checkbox in "synchronization & storage -> advanced" but some folder are not selected in either list (such as the one quoted just above) but TB seems to keep opening the folder anyway. What does "315 hdrs in use" mean? This may not be related to the original lockup issue though.

ah there we go:
2019-09-05 02:14:56.085022 UTC - [9141:Main Thread]: I/MsgDB nsMsgDatabase::Open(/home/aik/.thunderbird/1uyb844t.aik/ImapMail/imap.gmail-1.com/kernel.msf, FALSE, 0x7fc82b715c80, FALSE)
2019-09-05 02:15:06.556873 UTC - [9141:Main Thread]: I/MsgDB 10 open DBs

The "kernel" folder is 260000 mails. TB for some reason keeps opening it even though it is not subscribed or selected for downloading. So I guess the question is now how I control what folder is opened periodically by TB. Any idea?

To close the topic - the problem was with slow google mail which is slow when there is a limit for the number of mails exposes via imap. I had "10000" there and it seems to make folder refresh very very slow as (my guess) gmail spends too much time figuring out what mails to show. I removed the limit and suddenly everything is fine now.

It seems to be getting worse, I am working with an IMAP folder with modest 20000 mails and replying to a mail (with copying the reply mail to the same folder) makes TB rescan the folder and lock up for about 10 seconds. Annoying... TB 68.10.0. Does it really have to be that synchronous?

I created a new profile, configured all same mail boxes there and TB worked very quick for about 5 months. And now I am back to where I started - locks up every few minutes. Annoying :-/ TB 87.0b3, Fedora 33.
