Firefox Appending '/' to URLs - Why?

I notice recently, actually from quite some time ago now, that Firefox very frequently 'appends' a '/' (forward slash) character to URLs. So if I click in the URL box to highlight the URL, copy it, and paste it elsewhere it includes the appended /. I don't think Firefox did this in the past.

Why is Firefox doing this now? What purpose does it serve? Are there any rules that govern when a / will or will not be appended? (I can't see a pattern myself.)

I'm not seeing that here with version 68.0.1 under Win 10.
Is that happening with every URL or only certain ones?
Have you tried starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

As I recall, a valid URL requires a PATH and FILENAME at the end. If they are omitted by the user, a default filename is assumed, and
a default path of "/", the root directory, is used. I don't recall ever using a browser, including FF since version 3.0, that omitted the "/" after the domain name.

/ is delimiter for a path - if not present last is a file. Or redirected from server. See kerft. Valid url have a delimiter -> RFC.
