Odd characters

Post by nypsych »

I have been noticing strange characters in Thunderbird. For example, "weren’t that bad" for weren't that bad, and "You’ll find" for you'll find. replacing an apostrophe. Also other replacements. This makes it hard to read. Also others: "with similar" for with similar.
Any ideas as to what's going on? It seems to be happening only on messages sent or received on my Thinkpad.

Check your character set encoding. Setting it to use UTF8 for both send/receive in tools -> options -> display -> formatting -> advanced helps in many cases. Checking "when possible use the default text encoding in replies" is also useful.

It can also be due to yahoo/verizon/ymail/aol SMTP servers that lie about their capabilities. The workaround is to set mail.strictly_mime to true using tools -> options -> advanced -> general -> config editor.
