Disable Yahoo's Empty Email Folder Video Ads

Post by c627627 »

If Inbox or any Yahoo email folder gets emptied, yahoo blasts a large video about financial news, etc.

I did some research and saw a page talking about uBlock being able to do it, through the Dynamic Filtering Pane disabling 3rd-party frames (iframes) permanently across all sites. I was not able to follow instructions.

Is there a Filter that can be added to uBlock, or...?

EDIT: Solution: As of July 2021, code is:
||s.yimg.com/rx/up/builds/8.3.*/ifcp.html

If Inbox or any Yahoo email folder gets emptied
Neat. Never looked in an empty folder before.
(My "Archive" folder is empty.)
Sure enough an "ad" - even with "standard" uBlock filtering.
saw a page talking about uBlock being able to do it
URL?

I use (the more) "classic" style Yahoo webmail, & it functions (sufficiently) for me - with JavaScript blocked.
uBlock can do that easily enough - which will then also block the video in your empty folder.
(Can a folder be empty if it has a video playing in it ;-).)

Google search yields some uBlock filter code, which I tested not to work any more but maybe new custom filter code exists? Otherwise here is the web site to see if you can replicate if this works:
https://www.h3xed.com/web-and-internet/ ... -video-ads

Thank you for conforming this is a problem now. It only started happening to me this week but people have been talking about it for a while so this must be a gradual roll out by Yahoo.
When you say 'Classic' do you mean 'Basic' Yahoo email because 'Classic' is what I used for the past 20 years until a few months ago when Yahoo made it impossible to trick it to go back to 'Classic'. I was able to get around the forced switch to new Yahoo email by periodically logging in, using a 20 year old computer trick, Yahoo allowed reverting to 'Classic' email only if you logged in on older devices periodically but it's no longer possible to trick Yahoo email into 'Classic' mode, just 'Basic' modern mode... Maybe you know a trick back to 'Classic'? I think 'Classic' is permanently gone but you never know...

Either way, if you are talking 'Basic' mode, that is what I use too. Please advise on details on how to block the gigantic video using uBlock or other options and also please post if the solution would effect other functionality (just for our info).

Yes, the (still) decent "Basic" mode.
(Over the years, yes, Classic, then they changed it some, then some more, then it morphed into Basic [if that's what they call it currently]. In any case, I would never use their "normal" mode.)

(I am a VERY casual user of uBlock...)

uBlock -> open the Dashboard -> Settings -> I am an advanced user (enable)
open your "blank" Yahoo page, click the uBlock icon
inline scripts:
in the column next to the description, if you mouseover, it goes from green to gray to red
click the red, refresh the page, video should be gone

I am a VERY casual user of uBlock... I really don't know what I'm doing here. When you check marked the Advanced entry, there was a link to read (I have not). You may have to specifically save that setting, don't know? Why there are two column there, don't know?

Anyhow, see what you can make of it.

Oh, I see, leftmost column is Global, rightmost is Local (the current site).
So do NOT use the leftmost, use the rightmost.

Heh, yeah that might do it too.
I got something like this:

Code: Select all

||s.yimg.com/rx/builds/7.86.859.1565725337/iframe-controller-page.html
(Wonder if the 7.86... is variable?)

Thanks. You know, I tried that originally but got nowhere because it was a video.
After I read your post I started playing around the sides and finally got that right click option.
Thank you again.

I am adding this code to uBlock's My Filters TAB on all my Firefox profiles and it seems to work:

Code: Select all

! 8/23/2019, 10:24:30 PM https://mail.yahoo.com/b/folders/1?.src=ym&reason=myc&folderType=INBOX
mail.yahoo.com###messageListContainer > div:nth-of-type(2)

Frank (and others) is there a new code?

Interestingly the ads started to appear but only at first launch, if Yahoo mail inbox is the home page - but when page is REFRESHED - they disappear...

As of June 12, 2020, uBlock Origin cannot block Yahoo email ads and invasive sound-blasting videos.

However, Adblock Plus icon > Block element > now I CAN select the video playing space and this still works to resolve this problem.

But sadly uBlock Origin does not seem to be able to activate the blocking selection on Firefox 52 ESR which I am using. Adblock Plus can.
