Unexpected collection of statistics

Elhem Enohpi, please: did you find the unwanted connections with Waterfox Classic alone?

If also found with Firefox: which version?

No. Admins removed this button from extension page
after 7 minutes I got an absolute ban without the possibility of updating

Thank you.

I imagine that in some cases – including soft blocks (such as the one that currently applies to was requested for S3.Translator) – hiding of the button is automated.

Perhaps your first view of the page, before the seven minutes passed, included a cached view of things that should have been hidden from the outset? A guess.

If not automated: perhaps someone at Mozilla chose to temporarily prevent upload – pending investigations around the existing soft block. Again, a guess.

If you are not already aware, a gentle hint that policies were updated by Mozilla in June 2019. Publicised in advance – Add-on Policy and Process Updates | Mozilla Add-ons Blog – with invitations to comment in Mozilla Discourse.

Defocusing from S3.Translator

Since June, there have been occasional surges in blocking activity. I have not paid great attention but the surge at the end of November 2019 was remarkable https://redd.it/e3yzh6 and (if I understand correctly) one of the requests during that week was so broad-ranging that it unexpectedly caused crashes or performance issues for a small percentage of users. For anyone with an interest: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1603115 was updated sixteen hours ago.

Occasionally I spend time in IRC chat. I sense that most AMO people attend to issues (with great focus) on weekdays; without working at the weekend …

Your extensions

As Mozilla showed "good faith" relating to misunderstandings in 2015, I hope that the same will be shown on this occasion.

HTH

Kind regards
Graham

Can we get this thread back on topic? It's about a specific extension, not for discussion of AMO or it's policies.

Sorry,

the block is policy-based – and discrete.

I thought that it would help the developer (and other readers) to have some context about changes, and consequences, in recent months.

As an alternative we have – and Mozilla prefers – https://discourse.mozilla.org/c/add-ons

Perhaps it would, but not in this thread.

Any news about a version to work in Thunderbird 68+?

It would help if you would answer, even if just to say you definitely aren't going to make one - then I could unsubscribe from this thread and stop hoping.

Thunderbird 68 began to switch to WebExtensions.
Unfortunately at the moment they have abandoned some of the old APIs, but have not yet created new ones.
https://developer.thunderbird.net/add-ons/tb68/changes

As a result, now this situation: the old XUL version of the extension can no longer work, and the new WebExtensions version can not work yet

You can install Thunderbird 60 ESR

Re: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14852228 point 1 (collection of ancillary user data)

s3firefox@translator1 477d2308f84d667b2feb44cfb12035351d65a861112df2e1452efb5f9df29bdf appears to be OK, at a glance:

https://put.re/player/j9265Vbc.mp4

To avoid confusion, please, can you make available a file that uses a distinctive version number for the end result?

A non-blocked version 6.25 alongside a blocked version 6.25 may cause confusion. Also I assume that today's 6.25 477d2308f84d667b2feb44cfb12035351d65a861112df2e1452efb5f9df29bdf is significantly different from the 6.25 in Chrome Web Store. Three installations of 6.25:

Given the signifant difference of today's 6.25 for Firefox from the earlier distributions of 6.25:
  • 6.3 maybe?
Also use distinctive file names, if you like.

Thanks again

on, off, false

A guess (I am not a developer):

compare content/statistics.js lines 31 and 35 ("on" and "off")

with content/statistics_go.js line 117 (previously line 116),

Code: Select all

    if (statistics == false) {
Instead, this?

Code: Select all

    if (statistics == off) {
----

Still, I wonder whether Mozilla will treat the statistics as ancillary – even when the user does agree to collection.

For Firefox, for this extension, maybe advisable to never collect statistics of this type.

Any chances to see this add-on working for TB 71+ in the near future (and please don't forget users of Linux, like Mint or other Ubuntu based ones)?
The main problem for Linux users is an often non working bubble (=the small translator icon appearing below any marked text)
or a translation window which doesn't fit in any TB theme.
