[SOLVED]How set Evince as default pdf browser viewer (Linux)

Post by danjde »

Hi Friends,
I'm uisng Seamonkey 2.49.5 on Ubuntu 18.04, where I'm using Evince 3.28.4.
Now if I double click a Seamonkey Mail Attachment, I only see a blank browser page open.

On "additional components" -> Plugin, Evince plugin is present and active.

Running:

Code: Select all

ls -l /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
totale 100
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    37 nov 21 20:47 flashplugin-alternative.so -> /etc/alternatives/mozilla-flashplugin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 80296 giu 18  2019 libevbrowserplugin.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18856 giu 27  2019 libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so
it can be observed that the link point to /etc/alternatives/mozilla-flashplugin, and:

Code: Select all

ls -l  /etc/alternatives/mozilla-flashplugin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 nov 21 20:47 /etc/alternatives/mozilla-flashplugin -> /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so
seems to point to an old acrobat pdf reader installation, or so I seem to guess.

My silly question is:

how I could now revert to the correct Evince library plugins? :roll:

Many thanks!

David

No, that code is for the Flash Player plugin.

The Open or Save file dialog window opens when I select a PDF file in SeaMonkey.
From there I can use my default Document Viewer, or chose "Other...".
Choosing "Other..." opens another dialog with a list of other applications I can use.
You should see the same and be able to find Evince from there.
Set it as the helper application and check "Do this automatically for files like this from now on".

I use the default Document Viewer that installed with Ubuntu 18.04.

EDIT: That viewer is Evince.
I also get the Open or Save dialog window if I try to open a PDF file attached to an email.

Yes, but in my situation, no one " Open or Save file dialog window" appears. I can only see a blank browser page, no choice proposal.
Therefore what could be a possible alternative?

Many thanks!

Try to download this PDF (I tested this feature with it):
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/p ... -brief.pdf

When dialog window will open with question what to do with it, then you can choose your OS default PDF viewer and mark "remember" option. Then you can check it to e.g. change PDF viewer:
Menu -> Edit -> Preferences -> Browser -> Helper Applications -> in "Content Type" column search for "Adobe Acrobat Document" -> when you'll find it you can check "Action" or change it if you want

I tested it with SeaMonkey 2.49.5 x64 under Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia Cinnamon and it works. No screenshots because it's Polish language version.

I cannot to display the linked pdf.
If I click over your html link obtain a blank page followed by the warning: "Seamonkey not reponding" -> wait or kill.

How I could debug this behavior?

Many thanks again!

I've found a workaroud:

Turning OFF "additional components" -> Plugin, Evince plugin.
So I can see the Open or Save dialog window,

but what does it mean this behavior? :-\

Additional components in SeaMonkey? Where do I find that?

Sounds like you added something to SeaMonkey that you don't need. Just remove it.

[..].

maybe I translated wrong, I'm using italian language, where it is: "Strumenti" -> "Componenti Aggiuntivi"
I think translated: more correctly into: tools -> add-ons (Ctrl + Shift + A)

Thanks!

I've try on "safe mode" and SeaMonkey hangs only if I manually enable Evince plugin on Add-ons.
Leaving disabled the evince plugin (Evince 3.28.4 plugin) all is working fine.

Code: Select all

seamonkey -safe-mode
