Last Win7 Security Update (Solved)

Post by mightyglydd »

I deleted an earlier post because no one seemed to be interested; but it's been confirmed.

Desktop wallpaper functions broken.

Hi MTG,
Thanks for posting this.
I only install the Security updates, as per "askwoody dot com", so have not noticed anything different.
But, my wall paper is the full screen size (19" monitor, 16 x 9) & as such do not use the "Stretch" option.
Just the "Centre" option.

NB: I have MANUALLY installed updates dated on & from the 15th...& the MRT is dated the 16th. (Bit of a risk but then ?)
Installed updates are...
1/. Security Update for Windows (KB4534251) Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 10:48 PM

2/. Security Update for Windows (KB4532960) Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 10:52 PM

3/. Security Update for Windows (KB4534310) Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 11:20 PM

4/. Security Update for Windows (KB4534314) Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 11:33 PM

5/. Security Update for Windows (KB4536952) Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 11:42 PM

6/. 2020-01 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 7 (KB4535102)
Installation date: ‎15/‎01/‎2020 11:57 PM

7/. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2020 (KB890830) Installation date: ‎16/‎01/‎2020 12:24 AM

The posted "fixes" appear to be the way out, until MS fixes the problem.....if at all. :)

It was Security Only KB4534314 here; wallpaper 'stretched'.
Currently uninstalled, maybe they'll fix it.

Hi MTG,
Sorry. I forgot to add the following...
Ref; The bleeping computer site for more info & a work-a-round...
> https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/m ... tionality/

Not really advisable to remove either of the 2 security updates.
ie: KB****310 or KB****314.

Read the Comments...

I'll take desktop customization over the last 'security' update anytime.
The mistake I made was updating on Patch Tuesday...something I never usually do. (Ironic that this is the first Security Only update that's ever gone crook)
If they don't fix it f-em, it's on to the Win 10 laptop anyway....... :)

No Probs.
Hopefully, WIN 10 will behave itself & not play up too much.

Strange that MS will only support the latest 3 versions.
Anything earlier & who knows?

I have v1511 on a separate drive but it's never been opened since it was installed & configured to not phone home...so much.
Damn thing doesn't have the drivers for my old CANON Scanner & CANON hasn't updated them either.....
So, I've stuck with WIN7.

About 6 months ago I purchased a nice middling Win 10 gaming laptop, I've barely used it as I can't stand the OS.....
I'm done screwing around with crud filled Linux Ubuntu/Mint flavor Distros, keep thinking I should have got a Mac...

That, is just the way that I would've expected MS to respond rectify to their problem.
They really don't care about anyone (all us useless peons), who uses WIN7 anymore...except those that can afford to pay for their
so called "Support."
Proper A$&holes.

Yep.
It's just "another one" of their very many stuff-ups.
I've lost count of the exact total but it's a h%#& of a lot.

Good luck with WIN10.

So, I waited awhile, reinstalled the offending Security Only update

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.co ... =KB4534314

Then installed

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.co ... =KB4539602

Stretch is back working........ I guess the only way one would know about this is if using a stretched wallpaper as i was, all other settings worked.

Sigh my wifes computer is the last one in the house running Win 7 and I know she hates change so the loss of support is going to be a nightmare the onlt time she lets me update things is when her old pc's die and even then I put up with months and months of whinging how much she hates the new OS

I dare say this thread is gold. First the wallpaper issue, and now internet backgammon is gone....

Typical ass-hattery that happens when Microsoft in all its wisdom says we will "fix for you". LOL.

I'm still on Win7 Pro myself and I didn't even notice until you made your comment. I hope to ride this out until the next major release... Win11? or whatever they're planning on calling it formally. I hated Win10 when I tried it a few years ago. I know it's gone through some major "improvements"... but I sitll have no interest in trying it out again.

Personally, I would love to get a Mac. I only have basic skills with it and would love to become more versed in it. However, I like to game from time to time so I could never totally get rid of Windows completely.
