asking for but not storing or saving passwords
i'm using Firefox 78.0.1...i have options set to save passwords. i am asked to save the password every time i enter one on a site but they are not saved..there are zero passwords in saved passwords

Hi, Just an idea here...
Check this KB article & refer to the sections on "Password Manager settings" & "Passwords cleared with Clear Recent History."

You are using Firefox 78 with its own profile since you posted with a Waterfox version ?
You can try to rename or remove logins.json and key4.db and when present key3.db in the profile folder in case there is a problem.
