Replacement for virtual identity add-on?

Post by joli »

Having been a happy user of the virtual identity add-on for many years earlier this year it seems update 68.4.2 to TB has annihilated that add-on. So for the moment I'm sticking to v60.9.1 which still supports the add-on. Does anyone know if there is an updated add-on which covers the same feature?

For those who may not be familiar with virtual identity composing email, it selects my From email address for the email depending on who I am sending the email to. So, for example, if I'm sending an email to Fred Bloggs it will search its database and set my From address to, say, me.joli@example.com. Basically, I use these different From addresses as a spam prevention feature. So, using my previous example, if I start being spammed at my address me.joli@example.com then I disable this address, created a new one and tell Fred bloggs my new email address and it's job done, no more spam at my old address as it's been disabled. The result is that I get virtually no spam at all (usually less than one a month) whereas all the people I know who process large amount of email are often swamped by spam.

However, in order for my anti spam system to work, I need an add on like virtual identity.

That's a complex addon, difficult to convert.

ThunderKdB (see "Thunderbird 78 Compatible" for extension list)

So is the bottom line that there is currently no comparable add-on that enables me to do what virtual identity has done for me for many years and no one is interested in recreating its functionality? If so, is it best for me to stick with my version 60.9.1 and ensure it is not updated?

Take a look at https://github.com/absorb-it/Virtual-Id ... -539075574 (discussion found using morat's link)

At first glance it looks like all three criteria that the add-on author stated would be needed for the equivalent functionality to be available in core Thunderbird (though packaged differently) is available in 78. It does require that you manually add "mail address used for recipients together with collected addresses in address-book"

However the next to last comment in the bug report mentioned in the github discussion links to a blocking bug report if you use reply/all - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1652147 . I suggest you do some experimenting.

Identity chooser is being ported to version 78. While that's not a replacement for the virtual identity add-on it does add more support for multiple identities. I suggest you take a look at it later on, and see if its Issues on github mention any forks once its been available for a while.
