Thunderbird cannot connect to Gmail

Post by peasantmk2 »

Hello,
Since the update to TB78 I have one PC where Thunderbird has been unable to download emails from Gmail. It can send them fine. If you go to 'Get Messages' it says 'connecting to imap.gmail.com', but gets no further.

I tried to recreate the email account, filling in the account details correctly, but when I click on 'Done' it says cannot connect to server, check the details are correct. They are, as I can log in to Gmail on Firefox no problem.

It works fine on other machines. Am I looking at a reinstall? Thanks.

On Windows using an AV program other than Windows Defender?

Disable it and try again.

Thanks all. For some reason TB was telling me it was trying to connect to Gmail, but I doubt that it actually was. I couldn't create any Gmail account on it at all. In the end I took a backup of the profile, and the Thunderbird folder from \Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming.
I then reinstalled Thunderbird, and created the Gmail account again. All works fine now.

I think there may be a bug in an update. I've had three PC's that have had the same problem, two with Gmail, and one with TalkTalk. All using IMAP. The symptoms are the same with them all in that TB is trying to connect to the IMAP server, but nothing happens. I wonder if it has something to do with a security certificate because after reinstalling and setting up the account again you get a security certificate problem message. Clicking on allow security exception lets you install the account and all is working again.

Hello,

This turns out to be a problem with ESET security products, and they have a KB article here:

https://support.eset.com/en/kb7728-unab ... -installed

Yeah, there have been numerous reports of the same issues posted by users of ESET.

To fix the problem do this:
Go to Eset program
<F5> to bring up advanced setup
Click "Web and Email"
Toggle SSL/TLS off
Click OK
<F5> again to reopen advanced setup
Click "Web and Email"
Toggle SSL/TLS on once again
Click OK
SHUTDOWN your computer and then turn it back on

Thunderbird email will work again
