Settings I restored went missing again

I switched [successfully, so I thought] from the update channel to ESR. Unfortunately, my history and many of my settings, including my pinned tabs and extensive notes used by add-ons, were not restored--so I took the time to reconstruct most of these before leaving my computer for the night. One setting that I did not change back was Fx's default to automatically update, and Fx did in fact update to a higher ESR version. Now I see that the settings I had laboriously reconstructed are gone!

I will likely at some point want to switch back to the update channel. How can I prevent this problem at that time?

I'm also concerned about future Fx updates even when I'm still in ESR. I really don't want to lose my settings again.
