Folder "staged" in extensions in the profile

I found a folder named "Staged" in the extension folder in the profile folder.
It contains these folders

All these folders are empty. What are, or what were they? And, can I simply delete them?

Those might have been temporary folders created for extension updates. If they are empty, I can't think of a reason to keep them. But you might let Firefox shut down fully before removing them just in case.

I don't have that folder in a fairly new profile (< 2 months old).
