New Minimo 0.006

Post by Futile »

The Minimo 0.006 was posted yesterday at http://www.meer.net/~dougt/minimo_ce/. I unzipped the it and ran it from my sd card. Unlike in 0.005, you run minimo.exe.

The program is very different from the 0.005 release. There is not much horizontal scrolling needed as the font size is considerably smaller. This makes certain websites unreadable.

The first website that I visited was to maps.google.com. I read that .005 was supposed to work on maps.google.com but it did not. Version .006 does not as well. Maps cannot be viewed, nor are directions. When clicking on the search button, it fails to go anywhere. You cannot see very easily what you type as the font is way too small.

The next web page visited was cnn.com. When typing the web address, you have to hit the enter key on your keyboard. Minimo was helpful in that it entered for you the http://www before the domain name. That was nice. Some of the fonts on the website look really bad. I had a lot of horizontal scrolling on the site. The menu listings on the right failed to work. In addition, the browser crashed. I had to reboot my HP IPAQ 4350.

After the reboot, I went to yahoo.com. Most of the fonts are really small. If I were nearsighted, I would have given up on the browser by now. It is way too small. I tried to click on a news link but it failed to take me to the news item.

The new release in terms of the layout looks good but in terms of everything else, no not at all.

No double tapping in Minimo .006 to enter the web address. I cannot tell from the browser if the website has fully loaded. Some websites do not work at all on the browser. It crashes (yes, it is expected as it is a beta version). Overall, .005 was better.

I would hope in future editions, the ability to change the font size, to be able to fit the text to the screen size, a personal security manager (cannot visit secured websites -anything with https:) a way to determine how much longer the website has until it is fully loaded, to be able to add plugins and to have it compatible with most or all html codings.

Updated my tutorial to include a link to get Minimo 0.006 but advised against it based on this post.

However, the tutorial is still a good guide to install 0.005 on your High Resolution PPC.

Futile, can you tell us if 0.006 has to be forced into hi-res like 0.005?

minimo .006

I installed .006 just two hrs after it was posted on the download site. Samsung SPH i700 running Windows Mobile 2003, and I put it on an SD Card.Takes at least 10 MB of program memory to run it & just locks up if you don't have available memory beyond that. No, maps.google.com won't finish loading, but if it is maps you want to see, minimo does work on mapquest.com quite well. It also will display loop radar in motion on sites like intellicast.com.

I also have .002 & .005 both of which work ok except for no file download or https capabilities. .005 & .006 both work in landscape also.

I have no idea about whether it has to be forced into hi-res. I can state though that I felt that the graphics looked sharper than in Pocket IE.
