Well, I've been trying to see if I could get my thunderbird email into outlook to try it out there. I have a few older messages on Outlook, and from what I can gather, it does a good job of keeping blocks of quotes indented at the same level.
I hate to make it sound like i even like Outlook, 'cause in so many other ways, I can't stand the bloody program. But TB is definately frustrating me here.

I'm not sure which internet standards you refer to, but the evidence is very much that it does not "quote like it was originally set". If you have contrary evidence, it would be useful to see it.

I wish. The TB default is lines for plain text too.

All others I've used do it fine by default.

I'm at a loss. I usually just compose in plain text as I've been doing for centuries Maybe someone else has an idea. Something in userprefs or... Some coding that you can add. I'm not at all an expert there.

Alternatively there's Clippy, which is faster:
Highlight your email.
Copy it.
Press the Clippy hotkey
Paste into a new email

But once I took the file userChrome.css and renamed it as userContent.css (something I got from one of anowack's posts) that did the trick and removed the vertical bars on each side and it doesn't indent either. Yea! Thanks to both of you.
Old women used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and saying, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

So guys, after all of this, what is the process to get rid of JUST the colored bars but NOT the > characters? I've tried variations of the above with no success.

God, I feel like a right prat. I hadn't noticed in the previous post that the person was naming the file userChrome.css instead of userContent.css. Sorry about that.

I have found the easiest way is to install the Quote Colors extension.

FANTASTIC extension Gord. Thank you VERY much. I like this better than what I was thinking of AND it lets me do that too. Do note that the above link actually doesn't work. You need to download from the official site:
http://quotecolors.mozdev.org/
It'd be perfect if they could get this to work in the composition window as well but it appears they believe it can't be done.

Yes, it is a very good extension.
Edit:
By the way, the link I gave worked for me.
Edit #2: I hope Mr Liu is happy.

Yeah, didn't work here. It gives a faulty message and there's a review below showing it didn't work for others. Go figure.
