Oh, OK... I thought everyone was in on this weird anagrammatical thing.

My first comment on the voting so far, over in the other thread: wow, but are there ever a lot of folk on this list with terrible reading comprehension skills. The instructions were dead simple, but a good 10% of respondants still screwed them up.
As for my choices, I seem a lone voice on all but 'quicksilver', but I'll still pony up my reasons: antidote Because that's how I view Phoenix: as an antidote to all the bloated browsers out there. quicksilver It has the word 'quick' in it, which is nice but also, quicksilver is another name for elemental mercury, and Mercury was the name of the Roman god of speed. I also like 'Hermes' for that same reason (the Greek god of speed), but this way we also get 'quick' into the name. svelte Because that's the main thing that I like about Phoenix: it's svelte. Small and lean, at least compared to other browsers. finesse Phoenix is like Mozilla, but done with finesse. puffin Admittedly my reasons for this one were less than compelling. The name has a good sound to it, and it would make for a fairly cool logo. Besides, puffins are cute. This one was a toss-up with SCAMP, though, so I'll not be unhappy if the latter makes it. I came out of lurking on this board and registered just to place my votes and BEG the developers not to choose Firebird even if it were to win. Fine, so it's pretty much a synonym for Phoenix, but it also sounds like a "dumbed down" form of Phoenix. It also doesn't really roll off the tongue very well.
If everyone really wants to keep the connotations to "fire" in the name, then I would suggest Firefly. That one definitely rolls of the tongue better when said aloud. And it brings to mind the image of something small and speedy, (two qualities which the majority of us enjoy about this browser). I would say this is my favorite name so far. I also voted for Condor simply because I liked how it sounded, but upon further thought, I don't knew if we want the browser named after a huge bird that's nearly extinct. Newt is another nice one. It's short, yet unique. Also, it is reminiscent of the browser's lizardly heritage. Scamp (Standards-Compliant and Multi-Platform) is quite a clever and fitting acronym. I voted for Sphinx mostly because it was Firebird's main competitor at the time and I have already made my view on that name clear. ZW Someone voted for Oceanus. I don't know if I could back a browser that ends in "anus". It would certainly end up the butt of many jokes. (See, they're starting already!)
Sarcasm - Another service I offer.
Firefox 3.0 :: XP From reviewing the name topics there seems to be some sentiment against certain names as well as for certain names. Would it be as well to have a top 5 least liked list as well as the list of favourites? Or am I over complicating matters?
![]() lol i think it's been complicated for a long long time already.

First, let me list my qualifications: I have good taste. Now, I suggest that Firebird is a loser name. It sounds juvenile, it's tacky. Sphinx 19
Firebird 17 Fox 10 Phox 9 Discovery 8 Ion 8 Athena 7 Px 7 Dragonfly 7 MOEBIUS 7 Oceano 6 SCAMP 6 hermes 5 Zephyr 5 flare/flair 5 Argo 5 Firefly 5 Photon 5 Fenix 5 Quicksilver 4 Equinox 4 Phusion 4 Echo 4 Didnt vote for sphinx but the more I repeat it .. I actually like it more ...am gonna edit my votes to add it in. Some of the choices are just plain sorry ones. People need to understand that to make a browser universally acceptable the name does matter to some extent, atleast to the extent that you can discuss about it with everyone without feeling uneasy. At: Sat 14th Dec 2002 4:21am ( What the hell am I doing sitting up so late?) Linux + Firebird + gtk2 + XFT is neat.

Does that mean Firebird, Fox and Px are out? Oh, and Sex ![]() On another note, Fenix also makes little sense. "I don't use IE, I use Fenix." "How do you spell it?" "F-e-n-i-x." "Whoever programmed that couldn't spell." "Er... it's a long story..." (;´Д`) nani kore? ヽ(´ー`)ノ .sig desu yo!
@ash: the developers want no names that sound like phoenix, so you don't have to worry that fenix will be picked.
about "sex"... lol. yeah, you can't forget that one. i really do like that as a name, but i don't think everyone would really go for it, unfortunately. ![]() ![]() also, i have a funny thing to bring up. ![]()
i'm so popular that i've invaded the english language! i'm more popular than pete! :o
wouldnt say that Firebird is out .... Company Memo: Dear Collegues, As part of the recent changes in the technical infrastructure we have recently installed a new browser on your machines. The name of the browser is Sex. Please note this does not entitle you to surf pornographic sites while you are in the office. People who do so will be provided with an alternative browser called PIMP. Regards, Iron Gates. Linux + Firebird + gtk2 + XFT is neat.
No, Sphinx would be on my list of least liked names. I think the 'nx' ending sounds awful and it just makes me think of the word 'sphincter' ![]() The one that's really growing on me is Dragonfly - light, small and agile, which is perfect for the browser formerly known as Phoenix! ![]() After a certain amount of time, let's take the top 10 and create a poll and let people vote.
no polls allowed.

I don't understand that, really. We're into diversity, and some random user's poll puts no obligation on anyone. <sigh></sigh> Ed Who is onlineUsers browsing this forum: No registered users and 2 guests |
