* Which version of Thunderbird? Check Help>About for the version number.
* What operating system?
* What is the exact wording of the error message you are recieving?
* Do you have any extensions installed?
* Do you use a theme other than the default?
* What kind of mail - POP, IMAP?
* Is your mail service from an ISP, corporate e-mail system or Web-based?
* Are you using an antivirus and/or a firewall program? Which ones?
* Without divulging your e-mail address or account name, what are your server settings in Tools>Account Settings> account >Server Settings?

version 1.0.7
windows xp sp2
no error message just doesn't get the emails
no extensions or themes
pop email account
Charter is a ISP
Norton antivirus and firewall and I have given thunderbird permission
pop incoming smtp outgoing

The thing that gets me is all I did is switch ISP's an it won't work with the new one. Also I have uninstalled and reinstalled

Uninstalling/reinstalling won't do anything for this problem. Are you absolutely positive that you don't have a typo anywhere in your server settings?

Norton has been causing a lot of problems lately, including this. If there absolutely is not a thing wrong with the settings, try disabling email scanning in Norton A/V and reset your permissions. Norton is not the best security solution out there. I have my own machine better protected will all freeware/shareware programs. You might want to consider getting rid of Norton...

I checked the settings and everything is fine there. Just for kicks I tried using outlook and Opera mail clients. Outlook says server not responded and opera says nothing it just doesn't download like thunderbird does not. What settings can be messed up with Norton thunderbird has worked wel with it for over a year maybe a recent patch or somthing I'll look into. Any other ideas for me to try?

you were correct about norton I disabled the firewall and the antispam and now it will retrieve messages. I will turn one back on at a time to see what exactly it was.

If you decide to uninstall Norton, here are some suggestions for replacement:

I have my system set up with:

Kerio Firewall: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html
Avast! Antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Ewido Security Suite: http://www.ewido.net/en/ (XP only)
WinPatrol: http://www.winpatrol.com/
SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html

All these programs have free versions and are very effective. The only one that isn't fully free is Ewido which is a 14-day trial, but only disables automatic updating (I now do it manually) and a couple of minor features and I feel that this one is so good that it is worth paying for just to support their efforts. Still fully functional for what I need after trial. Haven't had an infection on my computer in a long time.

Another firewall that is highly recommended is this one. Do not load two on your system.
Sygate Personal Firewall: http://www.spychecker.com/program/sygatefw.html
