I was browsing a secure shopping site today and noticed that the security 'padlock' icon was displayed as broken, in both the address bar and the status bar. Also the status bar did not display the first part of the URL as it normally does.
Let's say the site was https://shopping.example.com. When I double-click on the padlock, I get a pop-up
"Web Site Identity Verified
The web site shopping.example.com supports authentication for the page you are viewing. The identity of this web site has been verified by Equifax Secure Inc., a certificate authority which you trust for this purpose."
which looks just like the information I get when logged in to Amazon (except that Amazon has Verisign as the CA).
Strangely when I go to the "Contact" page on the site, I get another page under https://shopping.example.com, which does have a correct unbroken padlock.
Any ideas?
What does a broken security icon mean?
