Blah.. that sucks :( I'm glad it's somewhere, but that means we can't take advantage of that in any extensions for a long time :(
I was hoping to build a 'thubnail' history extension for firefox.. but I guess that will have to wait.
Is there any C++ hacker that can make an XPCOM for toDataUrl() untill gecko 1.9 ? It shouldn't be hard (I'd do it if I knew C++ :) )
see more here -> http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/search?string=toDataURL

Don't forget Tab Catalog.

Gotta catch em all!

rich: I think I have a good way to do it. I can store a set of canvases, and just drawImage to another canvas. drawImage shoudl be fast enough to do in realtime, unlike drawWindow. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this up this weekend.

FYI, bug 159853 in Bugzilla would be fixed very nicely by this. Or maybe just open an "integrate Ted's extension" enhancement request against Firefox? This seems like a really killer feature that I can't imagine the developers would want to relegate to an extension rather than in the core for Firefox 2.0.

Ted,

With the recent talk on Ben's blog about useability and tabs, it would probably be a good idea to do what is done in the above extension. TabCatalog has super-imposed a title bar with the page name and an "X" at the top of each image (see the sample image on the above site). This is rather nice and would be a good addition to your implementation in terms of an easily-visible way to close the preview image (and thus the tab) and also giving a name to each image.

As for an access key to start, CTRL-tab is already used to cycle through tabs on the browser-level. Maybe use ctrl-` (key right above tab). I'm not sure if this key exists on all international keyboards or if it is in the same location, but CTRL-` to open the extension is relativey easy to find and can be done with one hand. Using the F keys usually requires looking at the keyboard (at least for me). Also, once the extension is open with CTRL-`, it would be nice if CTRL-tab could be used to cycle through the images to try and keep the default behavoir that many people have used (and use CTRL-` again to close the preview window).

Just some thoughts,
Mike

New alpha build to play with. Not a whole lot different from a user perspective, a bit different under the hood. Still needs a bit of work, but it's getting better. Comments and suggestions are welcome!

(And yes, I'll enter it into the extension contest, even though I don't really need a new computer.)

Ted,

Can you make when we are using Ctrl+Tab, and use the mouse to click the preview, we can no need to close the tab?
thanks.
Sorry for my wrongly English.
