ok this has been happening more and more on my system since switching.
avg antivirus will lock in scanning email mode .
to fix i either have to go into avg and deactivate email scanner
or
close thunderbird, but you have to use the task manager. close regularly will still leave thunderbird.exe running in the task manager but not on the desktop.
turning into a bit of a pain.

AVG 7.1 working perfectly here.
Did you install AVG *after* Thunderbird? If not do so again. Make sure you select the Personal Email Scanner when installling.
In TB make sure the "Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages" item in Options/Privacy/Anti-virus is slected. Other than that...

AVG 7.1.35
TB 1.5 with UK dictionary and DOM inspector
WinXP SP2
Unless you want to post all your AVG configurations, it may be worth reinstalling as m.a.r.k mentioned. It could also be a bad TB install.
I've put both on few machines and never had a problem except on mine : my outgoing server was inactive for a while. But that was fixed by an AVG option, nothing to do with TB.
Of course TB may be affecting your AVG, but it could also be anything else
Hope you get it sorted

See this thread & my post at the bottom:

This seems quite a common issue. There are also some threads on the AVG forum. Given that AVG Free is hugely popular this may be worth a sticky when it gets solved.

I say it is AVG also, my AVG email scan hangs in TB and in OL. I don't use OE so I don't know about there. It will happen at least once a day and I have to Ctrl,Alt,Del and end the process and it also shuts down AVG, restart it and its OK.
