Enterprise Deployment

Post by pdeg »

Thunderbird is looking GREAT, and is my mailer of choice.

I would like to be able to roll it out to some 300 PCs, but a number
of extra things would make it a LOT easier to try and convert other people.

1. An .msi installer, so I can deploy via group policy from a Windows 2003 server, onto
XP PCs

2. Be able to control the users settings via Group Policy. i.e. I want to be able to control
their incoming and outgoing mail server settings. Also their their LDAP address books.

Even a default profile when they first start TB, that they can customise would be nice...
Even so ..... it would be be REALLY nice if I could force some settings.

Perhaps some condition Windows code that updates their profiles from Group
Policy settings on start up ??

3. We use redirected folders (onto the server) a LOT. In my caset the Application Data
folder. This causes a problem when I try to start TB on another PC, as the profile is
LOCKED. It would be nice if the profile was not locked the entire time the program is
working.

Many times I try to check my email on another machine, miles away from my office,
and cannot, as the profile is locked... Yes I know, I could have mutiple profiles, but
that is real pain, in my situation.

Regards
Peter

mozilla products support auto config or MCD to allow administrators to control account settings and preferences remotely. Thunderbird 1.5 ships with autoconfig support.

Many thanks for the quick reply.

After a couple of hours of reading .. I reckon the best primer is

http://www.alain.knaff.lu/howto/Mozilla ... index.html

At least I now have a better idea where it gets in profile info. Beware of
the differences between Mozilla and TB and Firefox. The link you provided
also has lots of interesting stuff on locking preferences etc etc.

I also checked the program files directory (s) to see where the defaults are stored.
Without making the discussion too technical, how can I get it to read the defaults
from (say) %LOGONSERVER%\NETLOGON\......

I do not want to have put a default profile on every PC ......

I keep see the MCD mentioned, but am unable to find any documentation
on it.. Can I get a pointer to to some documentation.

Thanks
Peter
