Bookmark Backup and Places (and Classic Sidebars 0.7)

Post by Pike »

Bookmark Backup and Places
A quick note to nightly Firefox testers who use Bookmark Backup, in Places enabled builds you'll need to add the following to the Other files section in order for your bookmarks to continue to be backed up:

Code: Select all

*.sqlite

Alternatively you can try this very rough Bookmark Backup 0.4.2 alpha 3 build which should/could/might handle it automatically.

Classic Sidebars
Version: 0.7

This extension adds back the Bookmarks and History sidebars that are currently not available in Places nighty builds. Once you've installed the extension you can load the sidebars by going to View->Sidebar or View->Toolbars->Customize. Please report any problems on this thread.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been primarily backing up necessary profile files to restore in case of hard drive failure or in case I need to completely uninstall Firefox for one reason or another. I now have it set as such:

Here's Restore Sidebars 0.2.

Fixes:
- fixed history to show all history, not just today's
- fixed drag and drop
- used my l33t copy and paste skills (again) to add a context menu

@Spellbinder

I'm not familiar with AIOS but I tried it and there weren't any obvious problems, though I could have missed something. Restore Sidebars is a fairly standard sidebar so hopefully it shouldn't break anything.

---

Here's Restore Sidebars 0.3.

Fixes:
- Added View->Sidebar entries
- Fixed a problem with drag and drop not working directly after opening sidebar
- Made bookmark folders open on single-click
- Tweaked XUL/CSS so the sidebars look the same as the old non-Places sidebars (except for missing items such as the search box and the history grouping dropdown)

Todo list for future versions:
- Fix clicking on +/- icons next to folders
- Middle-click on folders should open in tabs
- Support grouping of History by date/site/etc
- Add Bookmarks/History search boxes (might skip this, haven't decided yet)
- Add keyboard shortcuts (might skip to avoid clashing with potential Fx shortcuts)

Oh, these two extensions are very useful for me! Thank you!
And if you can, hope you can also make the Subscriptions has sidebar too ^^

howdy Pike,

slightly off topic ... you once mentioned that your were looking at making a tbird version of bookmark backup. that was in a thread where someone had hacked your ext to make it work in tbird.

do you still intend to support tbird "someday"?

take care,
lee

@Lee

I don't intend to support TB, however if someone else wants to then it wouldn't be too hard. They'd just need to edit the targetApplication arc in install.rdf, change the list of checkboxes/files in groups.js, and add the relevant strings to strings.properties (this only works in 0.4.2a1 and above, the checkboxes were hardcoded in previous versions).

I noticed a problem, I think. Restore Sidebar is not showing all bookmarks. I disabled AIOS in case there was a compatibility issue. Either way I get this:

Image

As you can see, I have a bookmarks toolbar, but it does not show as available in the sidebar. Even with Bookmarks Toolbar disabled, they are not visible in the sidebar.

In Places builds the bookmarks toolbar is separate from the rest of the bookmarks instead of part of. I'm not sure how easy it would be to mash them back together again, I'll look into it.

I new Places was going to be a challenge for Extension Devs, but man! If it's possible, cool. If too much work is to be expected, it's not a huge deal. Just thought I'd point it out. After all, the bookmarks toolbar is right in front of me. :lol:

Here's Restore Sidebars 0.5.

Fixes:
- Support keyboard navigation in the sidebars.
- Support grouping of History by site/most visited/last visited.
- Added a search box.
- Added Ctrl-Shift-B and Ctrl-Shift-H keyboard shortcuts for opening the sidebars.
- More minor fixes.

Notes:
- I've seen some quirks in the search, I think it might be caused by bugs in Places itself but I need to investigate.
- Unlike the pre-Places search boxes this one searches both bookmarks *and* history regardless of which sidebar you're currently viewing (I might change that later, I haven't decided).
- No grouping by date, haven't figured that out yet.
