Firefox hangs on CNN website - reproducible problem

Post by ack19108 »

Running FF 1.5b1 on a Win2K system with good resources.

Everytime I visit the CNN website and watch a video news clip, a series of things happen that lead to FF getting hung up:

1. Click on video link, window appears saying "plugin warning", I need Windows Media Player 9 or above (I have WMP 10)
2. Click on "Continue to video", and everything seems fine - video plays & all seems well until I close the video window.
3. Upon closing the video window, I get a message that FF has performed an illegal operation and must be shut down. Instead of shutting down, however, the app just hangs - no response to mouse, or any other input except "close window"
4. After closing all FF windows, there remains a FF process running that I have to go into the task manager and delete before restarting FF.

A plugin problem? I've tried unistalling and reinstalling WMP 10 - no help.
Eager to hear your suggestions!

Are you sure FF is using v10 of the player? May be using an older version even if v10 is installed.

the problem could be that you are using a beta 1 release .... a lot got fix between beta 1 and the official release of 1.5 ...

beta 1, beta 2, RC1, RC2, RC3, 1.5.0, 1.5.0.1 and 1.5.0.2

Personally, I would install 1.5.0.2, update all your plugings (java, Flash, WMP10

WMP 9/10:
1st: --> Full Step-By-Step Guide: Embedded Windows Media in Firefox
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206213

from this post ... You can test the Windows Media Player 9/10 plugin here:
* Broadband: http://jrzycrim.sitesled.com/mozilla/wm ... st-HS.html
* Narrowband: http://jrzycrim.sitesled.com/mozilla/wm ... st-LS.html

from this post ... Firefox crashes while typing to play embedded WMV files.
This can be cused by having the VLC Media Player installed, which includes its own browser plugin. This plugin conflicts with the WMP plugin, so you need to remove the VLC plugin for embedded WMV files to play properly.
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npvlc.dll <--- remove this from the plugin folder

2nd: Not working at "x" site may be due to bad coding by the web site or using IE ONLY coding (activex, M$javascripts, vbscripts, etc) which IE supports and Firefox does not .... there are lots of sites that will not work in Firefox for these reasons .... when I have a site that does not work correctly in Firefox, I use the IEview extension to open the site in IE ....
--> IEview extension
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/m ... .php?id=35
Author's homepage for this extension
http://ieview.mozdev.org/
Another solution to "view in IE" is the IE Tab extension
--> IE Tab extension

Personally, CNN site is written for IE .... and in many places, you are going to crash using Firefox. and in others, it works fine with Firefox .... I am convence that lots of the problem with CNN is due to poor coding ... good news, is IE7 (beta 2) crashes at CNN.com .... so maybe this will force sites like CNN to "fix" their sites to work with all browsers

I use winxp/sp2, Firefox 1.5.0.2, Java 1.5 rel 6 .... and this works here, not here is true for me, personally, I just use IEview to open sites in IE6 (winxp/sp2 version)

later, Richard
Rule #1: My computer is always right, the human is always the problem .. RULE #2: See Rule #1
using Win XP/SP2 (home) FF1.5.0.9 FF2.0.0.1 FF3a1 Tbird1.5.0.9 ==> Press for More Answers <==
