Installing Windows 2000

Post by slaphppy7 »

I have decided to upgrade from 98SE to Windows 2000...monkeyman has agreed to volunteer his time, and guide me through the process...

Hi;

I guess we'll start by making sure you have the correct folders on your D:\ drive. When you open the D:\ drive you should see two directories named Win2K Backup and Win2K Drivers. Just confirm they are there and leave explorer open.

Next, I will have you open D:\ Win2K Backup and create a folder called Desktop. Let me know when you have created it.

Okay, minimise Firefox and Explorer and check your desktop for any pictures, documents or folders you want to keep. Copy them, if they exist, and paste them into the D:\Win2k Backup\Desktop folder. Tell me when you are done.

All that's on my desktop are icons (15 of them) that are shortcuts to various programs/folders, and the wallpaper...Is this what you mean?

No, that's fine then. You don't have to do anything. Often people place documents and so on on their desktop for easy access (not a good idea) so I wanted to make sure they were backed up if they existed. You can delete the Desktop folder in D:\Win2k Backup. Next, create a folder called MY Documents in D:\Win2K Backup and tell me when you are done.

Actually, I have already copied and pasted my entire My Documents folder onto the D drive...Just by itself...should I place it into the Win2k backup folder?

No. The My Documents folder has "system properties" which may cause issues later. Copy everything that is inside of the D:\My Documents folder into the D:\Win2K Backup\MY Documents folder. That will make sure no unwanted baggage comes along for the trip. You can leave the D:\My Documents folder where it is for an extra backup. Tell me when you are done.

Great. Next I want you to open C:\ and see if any documents or pictures you want to keep are sitting there. Just C:\ Not inside of any folders. Tell me when you are done.
