following on from my previous userChrome.css entries to put the tab bar at the bottom, here's some css to put the tab bar on the left hand side of the window :)

Code: Select all
/* tabs at left */
#content > tabbox {
  -moz-box-orient: horizontal;
}
.tabbrowser-strip {
  -moz-box-orient: vertical;
  /* note: you can set this to -moz-scrollbars-vertical instead,
     but then the scrollbar will *always* be visible.  this way
     there is never a scrollbar, so it behaves like the tab bar
     normally does */
  overflow: -moz-scrollbars-none;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs {
  -moz-box-orient: horizontal;
  min-width: 10ex;   /* you may want to increase this value */
  -mox-box-pack: start;
  -moz-box-align: start;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs > hbox {
  -moz-box-orient: vertical;
  -moz-box-align: stretch;
  -moz-box-pack: start;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs > hbox > tab {
  -moz-box-align: start;
  -moz-box-orient: horizontal;
}
/* remove the close-tab button. trust me, you need to do this. */
.tabbrowser-tabs > stack {
  display: none;
}

some of it is probably redundant. and there are a few minor visual glitches, such as the tab above the selected one appears a bit wider than other tabs, with my WinXP visual style at least.

btw, don't leave out the overflow: rule, or the statusbar will get squashed when you have lots of tabs,and then the browser pane will expand to extend below the bottom of the window :)

iirc, to open a new tab/windows instead of reusing them after "doubleclicking" is

advanced.system.supportDDEExec false

in user.js or per about:config.

a small simple "open only tabs" extension would be nice to see.
would do it myself but im not a (mozilla) coding guru :|

A light weight alternative to Tabbrowser extensions, Tabbrowser Preferences does what you want.

Also worth noting it's updated to work with the most recent builds. Before a week ago, it didn't work with the newest builds.

Is there a way to thread the tabs? The implementation I'm thinking of is if you open a tab from a link in a page, that tab appears directly below your active tab and indented by 5px or something like that.

No, there's nothing like that. The closest you can get is TBE's tab groups, which will turn all tabs opened off of a main tab the same color.

I'd also go for TBP and/or QTPT

<shamless promotion>
QuickTabPrefTogglejust gives you an interface to the hidden prefs in firefox, and allows you to toggle them for sites that don't work with SingleWindow mode.

Holy thread bump Batman.

<promotion type="shameless">
TBP is indeed an excellent choice for anyone wishing to augment Firefox's builtin tabbed browsing controls ;)
