Firefox opens wrong page (url and content do not match)

Dear all,
for some days I have the following problem: Firefox (and also IE) does not open the URL I have typed in the adress bar but opens the one matching to a previous URL I have typed in lately. Here is one example:
1. When I open firefox it opens a page I wanted to visit 3 or 4 URLs ago but not the default page (www.google.de).
2. When I click on "home" several times, google is getting loaded
3. When I search for something, the google results appear
4. When I want to follow a link of one of the search results, firefox tries to open the site but with www.google.de/ as main URL (i. e. the link is: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ it tries to open www.google.de/firefox).
5. When I close firefox after that and open it again, the http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ site is presented instead of the default page (www.google.de) again.

This only happens on one PC (w2k, latest drivers etc.) since I have installed firefox 1.5x. With my notebook and firefox 1.0.7 everything is ok. I use a DSL router and latest virus scanners as well as spybot and adaware do not find anything unusual. Also the highjackthis log seems to be ok.

Does anyone has an idea? Thank's a lot in advance

Have you checked your HOSTS file for bogus entries? Check C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open the HOSTS file in Notepad. Check for incorrect entries. Normally you'll only see 1 entry to a local host unless someone/something has been modifying it.

Yes, I did. Content is: "127.0.0.1 localhost"
