Here's the new Thunderbird default theme

Post by Arvid Axelsson »

It's been too long without an update, but now I'm proud to finally announce a completely remade Thunderbird theme. This is how it looks:
Main window
Compose
Address book
Options
Main toolbar using small icons

Please tell me what you think about it. It should be available in builds soon, I think. There will be a Firefox version as well eventually.

Excellent, at least the large icons. I wish the Firefox default theme looked half as good. If this becomes a Firefox default as well, it will be a huge improvement. Beautiful work! Thanks you.

I like it. Reminds me of Phoenity, which I used for a while. :)

Not sure I like the dark background for the tabs at the top of the preferences window, though.

It reminds me of Phoenity too, in a good way. Excellent work Arvid.

I love it. It's my new Thunderbird theme for sure. Can't wait to see the Firefox version too.

I just wanted to thank Arvid for the great work on putting the theme refresh together for Thunderbird. It really looks good.

Look for it in trunk nightlies probably starting tomorrow.

After it bakes for a couple days and we collect some feedback, we'll put it on the Thunderbird 2 branch.

While, there's a lot that I like about the theme, there's also a lot that I don't like.
  • Junk = flame? Can someone please explain that correlation? I suppose the challenge is getting an icon that won't be mistaken for trash. :?
  • Can we stop using a pair of glasses, for the mark icon. That's another correlation I don't quite understand.
  • Use the standard feed icon for web feeds.
  • the blue arrow for the unsent folder, looks more like a sent icon to me.
  • I think the new thread column icon is an improvement, but I still don't think it does a good job of denoting "sort by thread". Perhaps some boxes/whatever to indicate messages within that tree...
  • Is that a light bulb used for the online/offline switch? Again, it's an improvement, but still doesn't denote online/offline.
  • did the function of the button on the right of the search bar change to "refresh", rather than clear field?
  • what's the reasoning for the dark blue background, in the options panel?

i dont get this one either.

ChrisI wrote:[*]Can we stop using a pair of glasses, for the mark icon. That's another correlation I don't quite understand.

yeah, perhaps opened letter/mail envelop for read email, and a sealed letter/envelop for unread mail?

ChrisI wrote:[*]Use the standard feed icon for web feeds.

i agree.

ChrisI wrote:[*]the blue arrow for the unsent folder, looks more like a sent icon to me.

i agree, a little bit misleading

ChrisI wrote:[*]I think the new thread column icon is an improvement, but I still don't think it does a good job of denoting "sort by thread". Perhaps some boxes/whatever to indicate messages within that tree...

i agree.

im fine with a light bulb to represent on/offline.

ChrisI wrote:[*]did the function of the button on the right of the search bar change to "refresh", rather than clear field?

very good point, i wonder the same thing.

ChrisI wrote:[*]what's the reasoning for the dark blue background, in the options panel?

i think this change looks great.

that said, i love the progress. cant wait for the firefox version.
