The files I copied (from my memory which may be faulty) are:

bookmarks.html
cert8.db
cookies.txt
formhistory.dat
key3.db
signons.txt
hostperm.1
mimeTypes.rdf

I did not copy user.js or userchrome.css or usercontents.css since they did not exit.
I did not copy perfs.js or searchplugins since that was not recommended.

By the way, I copied cookies.txt (30KB) but I did NOT copy cookies-1.txt, cookies-2.txt, ... cookies-2236.txt - a total of 2236 files that are all 3KB long and that definitely (in the subset I checked) have lines in them about gmail and my username on gmail. Could these be the problems? Even though I did not copy the cookies-NNNN.txt files to the new profile?

Thanks for all the advice!

I just tried removing all cookies (using the User Interface) in the new profile and I still have the problem with GMail. So it seems it is not the ookies. Any other ideas to try?

Those thousands of files should definitely not be there. Maybe you have some kind of privacy cleaner program that is locking the cookies file and forcing firefox to make new ones? Panda software for example is known to make trouble. Make sure also that it (cookies.txt) is not set to read only.

I would start again with another new profile and only copy bookmarks.html , key3.db and signons.txt .

Well with yet another new clean profile created and only copying bookmarks.html , key3.db and signons.txt over too it (thanks Tulilu), my problem is "solved". Clearing the cookies in the UI did not delete the 2000+ cookie files and the 2000+ cookie files were definitely causing the 8 second 100% CPU every 10 to 30 seconds when viewing GMail. I added comments to the bug report #257288 referenced in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_cook ... es_created - so I hope they fix the bug and prevent this kind of problem from happening to any other user in the future. It was VERY frustrating having to use IE for GMail!

Case Closed! :D

Well guest,

Read this link to learn how to create a new profile.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager

which basically tells you to open the "Start" menu, select "Run" and type:

firefox.exe -profilemanager

Then follow the prompts to create a new profile. Then exit Firefox.
The files of your old profile are probably in a directory like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<random_characters>.default

Now to navigate to this directory you will have to tell windows to show hidden directories since "Application Data" is hidden to protect the innocent.
Your new profile directory will be something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<different_random_characters>.<your_new_profile_name>

So then copy bookmarks.html , key3.db and signons.txt from your old profile to your new profile. and startup Firefox again. You will need to redo the settings of any options or other things you setup in Firefox, but that isn't too hard.

So, I am curious, in your old profile directory how many cookies-NNNN.txt files did you have? Which websites did not work for you because of the long pauses?

Would seem i have more problems with firefox than i thought,

when i type firefox.exe -profilemanager, in the Start, Run menu...it just opens up another firefox window and loads my homepage...doesn't start a profile manager program.

I also have Session Manger extnesion active, do i need to uninstall this first?

Guest,
You need to make sure that Firefox is completely closed before loading up the Profile Manager: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application
Also the Session Manager extension will not cause any problems with loading the Profile Manager, so no need to uninstall the extension first.

i have done all that... i ensured that no instance of firefox was present in the proces list and i exited the main application.

but when firefox starts again, after the command "firefox.exe -profilemanager" , session manager asks if i want to restore the old session, wether i click yes or cancel...it only loads the google site, which is my homepage.

The problem is still here! I noticed 100% CPU with Firefox occasionally today and went and looked at my cookies list and found 133 cookie files. It looks like I get almost 10 copies of the cookie file each day and that it started just when I made just before my last posting on Oct 8, 2006 and continued up to today. Some of these copies are created in the middle of the night when I am not at my computer. I usually leave Firefox running 24/7. I have NEVER made the cookie file read-only or played any other games with the cookie file. Each file is getting bigger and bigger each day. So the cookie file duplication bug is still happening. All this time I ran in a new profile with Firefox 2.0 RC 2. I will clean out the copies of the cookie file and download and install the official Firefox 2.0 release today and see how things go from here. I hope they work on and fix the cookie duplication bug soon.

Here are the first few and last few directory entries:
