VLC plugin gone, now can't open .asx, .wmp files

Post by kickskass »

I had VLC installed with the plugin. After I discovered that the plugin doesn't offer any type of scroll bar, pause/play, volume, etc, I uninstalled VLC and the related plugins then reinstalled it without the plugin. Whenever I click a link to a media file, a blank page comes up with only the URL of the media. I can copy n paste that URL into VLC and it works fine, but I can't get it to open automatically. I already checked in the options under "view and edit options..." for file types. There are no entries in there and I don't know how to manually add them. I should mention that I have had this same problem both using Windows XP and Fedora Core 5, although I'm not sure whether both are because of the VLC plugin. I followed the instructions here: http://www.stanton-finley.net/fedora_co ... notes.html to install VLC on Fedora 5, and I'm not really sure if that installed the plugin or not.

Ideally, what I would like is for any such links to open a new VLC window to play the media bot in Windows XP and Fedora. Manually copying n pasting the link gets old after a while... Thanks.

Also, does anyone know why the VLC plugin doesn't show up anywhere under extensions? Is there a difference between plugins and extensions? Is it possible to manually remove all traces of that particular plugin? Should I post this on the VLC forum?

Yes, there are differences between plugins and extensions. Extensions are addons that extend the functionality of the browser. Plugins are essentially interfaces that allow a browser to load another program inside itself. Plugins should never appear in the Extensions window (though if a plugin is packaged inside an XPI file, it will show in the Extensions window during installation only.).

Is your problem in WInXP, FC5, or both?

both.

So do plugins show up anywhere that they can be removed? I was thinking perhaps I should just migrate to a new firefox profile, although it's a pain in the butt, it still may just be the easiest thing to do, but I'm not sure if it will even work...

Plugins are not in the profile - they are either in the Firefox application directory ('plugins' subfolder), or they are in the directory of the program they come from and registered in the registry so that browsers can find them. Removing them is usually a function of the program they come from.

In Windows, the vlc player installs its plugin into Firefox's plugins folder. I don't know about Linux.

Can you provide an example of a media file link that just opens a blank page?

In windows the file npvlc.dll should be in your plugin folder.
Search for it (winkey-F)

I checked about:plugins and there is no VLC entry. I checked the plugins folder and there is a file libvlc.dll, but that's all there is for vlc.

Here is an example:
go to http://www.handzonradio.fm/site.html/ and click "64K" (I know, I typically like the higher bitrate, but bear with me). Then click on "Windows Media Player." It used to immediately prompt for what media player I want to use, but now it's just a blank browser window with http://www.handzonradio.fm/newhandz.asx in the address field. Like I said, if I copy that link to a player it works fine.

Is there a way to upload my "about:plugins" settings or should I perhaps just copy n paste them here?

oh, and to avoid confusion, the title of this thread: "VLC plugin gone, now can't open .asx, .wmp files" actually contains a typographical error. It should read "VLC plugin gone, now can't open .asx, .wmv files."

When you directly load asx files, Firefox will call the Windows Media Player plugin to play it in a browser window. The WMP plugin does not allow itself to be called like this, and will load the whole file and then hand it off to the default media player for asx files. If there is no default player for asx files, you just get a blank window as you described.

You have the WMP plugin (I can see it in the list of plugins you posted), so you just need asx (and asf) files to be associated with Windows Media Player - go into Windows Media Player and check its file associations.
