preferences don't save from session to session

I have mozilla 1.5 (the same issue was in 1.4 on my box) running on redhat 9.0. If I make any changes to the display in mozilla and relaunch, those changes do not happen. example, closing the side bar. example, removing the display of columns in the address book. more examples, but basically they follow those same general ideas.

it looks like mozilla is not saving the display preferences. Any thoughts? I have checked file permissions and everything is rw for user.

the localstore.rdf was currupt, I guess. removed it and restarted mozilla and things worked great!
