problems with hotmail

hello from Spain,

I tried to send an email from gmail to hotmail. I tried with firebird, and I received nothing. I tried from gmail webpage and worked ok.

The gmail account shoud work. I tried to send an email from gmail using firebird, to a non hotmail account, and it worked ok.

Is hotmail blocking firebird?

I don't like hotmail.

I have my own company, my own webpage (with FutureQuest) and hotmail thinks that the messages from my company's account are spam, and takes them to the "massive mail" folder (i am not sure how it is called in english). So my clients, if they have hotmail, they do not receive my company's mails.

This is not caused by Thunderbird. Hotmail has done some nasty things in their spam blocking filters. Another poster found this:

I have been analyzing a problem sending from Hotmail to Thunderbird.
This is the results of my analysis.

Problem:

Intermittently, can't send messages to hotmail.

Solution:

Insert HTML formatting in message and vary message contents.

Factors:

It looks like a Baysian e-mail filter between Bell Sympatico and Hotmail is
being used to automatically delete e-mail messages. They DO NOT show up in
the Junk E-mail folder on the hotmail account.

Baysian filters use a technology that weights a number of factors to
determine if a message will be sent. +1 represents likelyhood of
uccess. -1 represents likelyhood of failure. If you score low on too many
chategories, the e-mail will be deleted.

Server:
smtp*.sympatico.ca -1 (likely failure)
other servers (tried mcmaster.ca) +1 (likely success)

E-mail program:
getemail.sympatico.ca +2 (likely success)
sitemail.netnation.com +2
univmail.mcmaster.ca +2
Any web browser based e-mail source: +2
Outlook Express 0
Mozilla Thunderbird -1 (likely failure)

Message Format:
HTML +1 (likely success)
Plain Text -1 (likely failure)

Message Contents:
Repeat of previous message -1 (likely failure)
Different message contents +1 (likely success)
Overly simple message -1 (likely failure)
Ex of overly simple message, Subject: "Test", Body: "Test"

Reply to Message Sent from Hotmail: +10
(Replies to messages sent from Hotmail almost always go through.)

If the score is high, the message will go through. If you score too low,
the message to hotmail will be deleted.

As I understand, if I use Thunderbird, I will never be sure that the other one will receive my email.

Well, I use email to work. So, after using thunderbird as my favorite email manager for two years, I have to quit using it.

This is only an issue when sending to Hotmail accounts and that is exactly what Microsoft is trying to get you to do here. Are you going to fall for their fraudulent business practices?

If you look at the rest of the conditions considered and get low scores elsewhere, the messages should go through.

I have been noticing problems with my email lately. People don't receive my emails. So I will keep on using Thunderbird for organizing and receiving emails (I love the antispam features) but I will always send emails from web based gmail.

Also I have another problem. Someone is sending spam with my company domain name. So, some spam detectors filter my emails as spam.

This is really annoying for me. So I have to use my new gmail account for sending.

That is annoying, but not unusual. They grab whatever email addresses they can to spoof and send out spam. Not a lot to be done unless your web host is willing to help. Even then, there isn't much.

If you created a POP3 account for gmail in Thunderbird (and use the gmail SMTP server) it would use the same email address as the webmail version of gmail.

I configured gmail SMTP, and it worked fine. But if I send an email using a second account, it will be received as it is sent with that first gmail account.

Add the second address to GMail on the website under Settings>Accounts.

NOW IT WORKS. I can send emails from all my accounts, using the gmail smtp. Hotmail receives the messages and seems as it is sent from my original account.

If you look at the properties of the message, you can read that is sent from gmail. But it is good enough for me. I will keep on using Thunderbird.

How to fix the Thunderbird Hotmail bug:

Emails which are a replying to a hotmail account is automatically "Accepted"

Theory: Trick Hotmail into thinking its receiving a reply.

Instructions:
1. C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR>\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\<YOUR>\

2. Make a blank txt file and rename it: user.js

3. Open up prefs.js and search for your 'id' account number.
eg. user_pref("mail.identity.id3.useremail", "<YOUR>"); thus 3 would be my ID code.

4. Still in prefs.js add the line
user_pref("mail.compose.other.header", "References,In-Reply-To");
Save and Close

5. Open user.js and add lines:
user_pref("mail.identity.idNheaders", "References,In-Reply-To");
user_pref("mail.identity.idNheader.References", "References: <>");
user_pref("mail.identity.idNheader.In-Reply-To", "In-Reply-To: <>");

where N is your id code eg, if my id code was 3,
user_pref("mail.identity.id3.headers", "References,In-Reply-To");
user_pref("mail.identity.id3.header.References", "References: <>");
user_pref("mail.identity.id3.header.In-Reply-To", "In-Reply-To: <>");
